Hiya! I'm looking to sell this stone, my mom passes away and left it for me. Can someone give me an idea on the size and what it potentially may be worth? She wanted me to sell it to help me pay for my Masters program In nursing. I know I need to get it graded and brought in to a real jeweler but there arent any reputable ones by me so I need to go the online route. Thank you soooo much for your time it's greatly appreciated :) I have more phoIMG_4305.JPGIMG_4276.JPGIMG_4281.JPG

Hi there, I am sorry to hear about the passing of your mother:( it was sweet of her to leave you her diamond so you can use it for something good...Honestly, from pictures it is pretty impossible to grade a diamond. Assuming you have a pretty standard size ring finger (6ish), to me it looks to be over a carat, but then again, the best way to estimate its value is to have it graded by a reputable lab. If I were you, I would send the stone to GIA for grading, but please make sure you have some insurance on it prior to shipping, if you go that route. Here Is a list of their services: https://www.gia.edu/analysis-grading-sample-report-diamond?reporttype=diamond-grading-report
Alternatively, you can find a trusted independent local appraiser to grade your stone. I would not take it to a jeweler and especially not mention that you want to sell it. They will be very fast to give you an extra low ball offer knowing that you know nothing about the stone and its value.
Where are you located? I am sure that we can find you a good local appraiser.

Agree with Simone. It looks like it could be 1.5 carats, but it's so hard to tell based on a photo

I'm sorry for your loss. I agree with others. Have the diamond sent to GIA for grading. Then, you can look online at prices for similar specs. A 'preowned' diamond will likely sell for 60-80% of the online values you can find. There can also be options to consign it. An non-certified stone (even one with an good appraisal) will sell for substantially less. So, for a stone that my be close to 1.5 carats, a few hundred for a certification is well worth it.

I would start with taking the diamond to a reputable appraiser (https://www.pricescope.com/appraisers). That will cost a few hundred dollars. Then, with their appraisal, use that to get a value to insure the stone to send to GIA. Unless you hand-deliver the stone to GIA in New York city, then you'll need to mail it to them. Jewellers Mutual and Lavalier are good options, but you'll have to have a guess in the value (which becomes a circular problem!).

Many members of this board use David Atlas. He'll give you mailing instructions to get the diamond to him.
