I'm planning to proposed to my girlfriend of 6 years and I've been searching for the right diamond for weeks. This has been one of the worse research project ever. I've came across 2 diamonds, they are approxiamtely $17,000, that I think will do the job but i want to know what the you guys think of them, since yall have a lot more experience in looking at diamonds than me. Which one do you think is better and are there anything i should be worried about? I currently have these 2 diamonds on hold til Monday and would like to make a decision by this weekend. I greatly appreciate any feedback. These diamonds are from James Allen, are there any concerns from this retailer? I know I'm asking a lot of questions but I'm just so confused.

I would get an idealscope image of both (they will do that for you, and hold the diamonds until they can get the images for you), post them and then we'll be able to help you pick between them.

I just placed an order for the idealscope and thanks for the help. Based on the certificate and images on the website, are there any issues?

Ask gemologist if the grade setting clouds in the first stone effect brilliance.
Check is second is eyeclean, just in case.

Both score fine on the HCA. I think that if the cloud is not effecting the brilliance of the first I would personally prefer the first because of it's smaller table. And I think the cut on it is more precise. But the other one looks promising and is bigger so if the smaller doesn't work out, hopefully the larger one will.

How do i ask gemologist? I'm sorry i'm new to this and have no clue. I did that talk to the representative through chat and asked if the diamonds are eye clean but they gave me a generic answer stating that VS2 diamonds are eye clean. Is there something special way to get in contact with someone else over at James allen?

This might be a dumb question but why would a diamond with a smaller table be more desirable?

Not all VS2's are eyeclean. When you are chatting with the sales person just say: " Please have your gemologist examine them for me and tell me which they prefer of the two and why. Please include in the request to the gemologist that I specifically want to know whether that the grade setting cloud in 1383440 is affecting the brilliance at all. "

They will get it done for you. :wavey:

You don't have to order your own IS,unless you want it for your own use. JA can take the images for you, just ask the gemologist when you ask about the cloud. Post the IS when they email it to you. :))

edit: oh wait, I may have misunderstood. Did you mean that you made the request to JA or that you actually ordered one of your own?

gypsy - Thanks for all the great info - I've ask the rep to ask the gemmologist the questions that you've listed.

Christina - when i said i ordered the IS i meant i did it through JA. sorry for the confusion.

has anyone come across James Allen increasing the price of the diamond after its been placed on hold? I swore the 1.67 caret was a few hundreds less when i placed it on hold compared to the quote they gave me today. But unfortunatly i did not take a screen shot of the price.

For me, what price I get depends on if I access JA though PS or not. If I access it through PS the price is lower because the system automatically applies the PS price. If I access it without going through PS it gives me the non-PS price. Just make sure you are getting the PS price when you pay though. :wavey:

Here are the idealscope of the 2 diamonds. I'm new to this so hopefully the images are displayed correctly.

The gemologist also responded regarding the questions asked.

"diamond 1383440 (1.67crt H VS2) has excellent fire, brilliance, and scintillation and faces the brightest of your diamonds. It has a true "H" color and faces perfectly eye clean. It's clouds are slight and very small and have no negative impact on the diamond whatsoever. They are so slight that the gemologist feels that they are closer to a "VS1" clouds than a "VS2" clouds."

"Diamond 1503420 (1.76crt H VS2) has great light performance and is a close second in regards to light performance. It also has a true "H" color and faces eye clean since its feather and crystal are so well blended and small. "

The Gemologist favors diamond 1383440 more because it faces the brighter of the 2 diamond. The 1.67 crt diamond is about $700 more than the 1.76 crt. What do you guys think? any input would be greatly appreciated.

...

I like the first one better because it looks more symmetrical.

Thanks for the input. It seems like the first one is the better option but wanted to get a little more feedback.

I have to make a decision on the diamond soon and wanted to know if anyone can comment on the idealscope? Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions.

I am a super newb, but I have been obsessing about the Pavilion and Crown angles and how much light is passing through... the smaller diamond seems to be the better of two because it reflects the light the best based on the images they provided you.

Good luck

I think i'm leaning towards the smaller diamond as well from the feedback i've received. Thanks for your input.

*I* personally perfer the look of the first one. The second one has some darkness around the base of the arrows that I dont
care for however, to someone who does not look at stones everyday, they may not notice (or care).

Smaller one hands down. Tighter cut, smaller table, brighter and more fire as well.

do you know how big of a difference the 2 diamonds will perform? Will it be noticable when worn on a finger?

Do you really have your heart set on the 1.76? The 1.67 seems to be the best choice based on the gemologist's comments and comments of members here.
