I have a custom made A. Jaffe setting that I commisioned for my proposal last year. Now it is time for them to make a wedding band that will sit next to it, and the day before we are due there they tell us they won''t gaurantee the fit unless we leave the ring for a few days. The person I used to mount the stone the first time was a bad experience.....anyone have feedback on someone who''d unmount the stone in front of us in the NYC/LI area? OUr wedding is in three weeks, so A. Jaffe want the order and e ring by Friday!! We are in a panic....

Why would you unmount the stone? I wouldn''t consider doing that. Is it insured? It should be if it''s not. I would send the ring as it is. It can''t be good to take your stone in and out of the setting.

Ditto. Prongs weaken everytime they are "worked on" -- no matter HOW great the person doing it. Think about it ... heating, re-heating, pulling, stretching ...

Make sure the stone is fully insured before you send it though!

I am not dying to unmount it....they first told me they could make a wax version of a basic ring, and then we could come sit with a modeler so he could modify the wax ring to fit against the e ring. Then, with the appointment being tommorow, they said it is going to be a complicated fit, and would only do it if we leave them the setting. We are both not all that comfortable with leaving the ring with the stone in it....it has not been out of my site since I bought it and had it appraised. It is insured, but there is a sentimental side that is even stronger....

If it were me, I''d probably just leave it. I wouldn''t mount and unmount and remount the stone. I don''t think you will have a problem. My FI had to send my diamond around the country for it to be worked with, and it all came back perfect.

can you post a picture of the setting? I guess I don''t get why a Jaffe would need your setting at all. can''t you just order the matching wedding band in the size you need? I don''t know enough about how their company works but seems like when they sell a set you can just order in the wedding band. anyway, I wouldn''t want to unmount it either. I just send them the ring.

I don''t have a pic handy, but it is a platnium solitaire with a domed top....most A. Jaffe is sold with a 1 carat round, but the stone I bought was a 1.5 carat rectangular emerald cut. They had to custom make the setting for me...not with a different head, like most places do, but actually by altering the design and casting it as one piece. This means that a regular band wont fit as the stone sticks out onto the finger (for lack of a better desciption...) and their matching band wont work as it is meant to go against a 1 carat round....

ok I see. well, I still wouldn''t want to mess with taking the stone out of the original setting. I know it''s hard to part with a ring but I think it would be best to just let them use it to make the wax for the wedding band and leave the stone in there. I''m sure all will be fine. they aren''t going to doing anything to your stone. good luck.

Sean, they do it every day. They don''t want your diamond. That''s good that it is insured just in case there was a tornado or something.

Just leave it and you''ll have it back before you know it!
