I am thinning out my jewelry and found this old sterling silver necklace. Curious as to how to identify a name for this chain construction. I have looked high and low and although I find some that appear to be close like wheat there is still a big difference. It is flat not rounded, has a sturdy push clasp and appears the same on both sides.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Some flat variation of a wheat link chain, maybe?

It may be although the silver is flat strips not threads. The oval shape is there and it is definitely braided. The same on both sides and flat. I've taken a horrid close up picture so you and see how it's braided. IMG_0959.jpg

The type of chain is defined more by how the links are interconnected than by the shape of the wire. Whatever Style this chain is, it’s clear it was “flattened” after the chin was woven/braided. It looks like a sturdy, very wearable chain!

I’d call it a modified serpentine. Pretty!
