Hello everyone,

I am in the process of replacing a lost ring. The ring that I had proposed to my fiancee with was stolen. I have found a similar stone and wanted to see what anyone''s thoughts were. And I know that many of you will ask and wonder about the clarity of the stone. It''s just a personal choice that I made. Nothing more to it. I am going to ask for a Gemex report as well as it does not have one.

ROUND BRILLIANT
COLOR: G
CLARITY: FL
CUT: EX
CARAT WT: 1.26
DEPTH: 61.2%
TABLE: 57%
CROWN ANGLE: 33.5
PAVILION ANGLE: 41.0
PAVILION DEPTH: 43.5%
STAR LENGTH: 50%
LOWER HALF: 80%
GIRDLE: THIN TO MED FACETED
CULET: NONE
POLISH: EX
SYMMETRY: EX
FLUORESCENCE: NONE

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

So sorry to hear about your loss....

FL - wow! Nothing wrong with that if that is what you want, go for it! The proportions look good, an Idealscope image is always useful but it depends on you, there might not be all that many well cut FL clarity out there. Is the diamond being sold with an online vendor or store jeweller? Not that it matters probably but a FL clarity might not be actually flawless under higher magnification than the grading 10 x but you probably know that.

I take it the diamond has a GIA report?

The stone does have a GIA report. My jeweler is helping me out with the search process and came up with this one as a replacement option for the original.

Thank you, good to know! I think it is well worth further investigation especially if the FL clarity is meaningful to you.

Should I be concerned about the 41.0 pavilion angle? Or does the 33.5 crown angle pair well with it?

It is a good pair with 33.5 crown angle.

Absolutely not in this case, the angles are well balanced. I am glad you mentioned about many of us wondering about the clarity grade you chose, it is important for us to respect the choices that others make without trying to persuade them into going with the choices we might prefer, so it is a good reminder. We don't want anyone to feel we are being judgemental concerning other poster's decisions, so we need to be respectful of clarity, cut quality, colour or where a poster may prefer to shop and so on.

Definitely! And I appreciate that respect! Awesome!

You are most welcome and the respect for your special choice is very important, I feel we are not doing our '' jobs'' properly if we can''t keep an open mind and work with what the poster prefers!

I forgot to add that on the GIA report the Girdle was listed at 3.5%. Is that a killer for this stone when it comes to cut?

No its fine, medium which is just right!

That is fine.

Additionally, I am confused because on the report it lists the stone as having a THIN TO MEDIUM, FACETED(3.5%) Girdle. How can the girdle be 3.5% if it says THIN TO MED?

Just the average measurement, thin to medium is just right. Faceted just means the girdle is faceted, a style of finish.

Looks good, Mitchell.

Here's a little explanation about girdle thickness: http://diamonds.pricescope.com/girdle.asp

Excerpt: "The best girdle thickness is Thin, Medium or Slightly Thick. There is almost always some variation in girdle thickness around a stone; Thin to Slightly Thick etc."

P.S. - I'm sorry to hear about the theft of your first ring. I just bought a ring and plan to propose very soon; having it stolen is one of my greatest fears!

I hope we are of some assistance in helping you find the right replacement.

Great! Thanks!

Most welcome!

I know I am probably being picky. Should I be concerned about the Pavilion Depth at 43.5? They ran the stone through a Gemex machine and the result came back as WHITE=HIGH, COLOR=VH, SCINTALLION=H TO VH. Any thoughts? Thanks.

No, the pavillion depth percentage is figured off of the angle. The angle is more accurate and a 41.0 is fine, esp with the 33.5 crown angle.

This one looks promising!

Any particular reason why the second is more promising, Lorelei? Thanks!

Ditto.

Does the jeweler have both stones so that you could compare them side by side and then make a decision, or would he have to call them in?

Therein lies the problem. He has to call them both in with a committment. So I am trying to decide on one or the other.
