My mom is looking for a new diamond ring and her only requirement is big. I asked if sparkly was important. Sure, she said, but I want big. I tried reasoning with her that $8,000 wasn’t going to buy her big and sparkly. I explained to her that she was getting older, and sooner or later she was going to kick the bucket so we needed to compromise on cut and size since someday I’d be sporting her ring on my grubby little hands. *** She knows I’m just kidding *** She listened as I explained how important cut was. She even injected “mmmhmm, yeah, ok” at all the appropriate places and **gasp** horror of all horrors she still wants size over cut. She finally agreed that some of the big diamonds she saw weren’t that pretty and didn’t sparkle, but she didn’t want to take the time to search for a “pretty” ring in her price range. Can you tell that diamonds really aren’t her thing? I told her with some help from PS I will find her a diamond. Here is what I’m looking for:

•A rb with a great cut (doesn’t have to be ideal since obviously she doesn’t care, but would like it to be close as possible)
•SI2 or even a good I1 (she said she’s half blind even with her glasses, so as long as people can’t see the inclusions when they look at her ring she is ok with whatever)
•Color I-M or maybe even N with some fluorescence(she said she is willing to sacrifice color for size and sparkle and she wears yellow gold)
•As big as she can get

She has been given a deadline by my dad of December 17th.

Thanks JulieN. The GOG one definitely has potential. I''m not loving the ring Pearlman''s, but that''s a lot of diamond for a little money so I may have to call and ask about it.

How funny, I posted about the J at GOG the other day! I knew it would be right up somebody''s alley!!

Does your mom like antique cuts? I was just looking at this at at Faycullen...

It doesn''t talk about any certs or anything, so I''m not sure about the cut, but I love OEC''s and I love the setting!

Oh darn! I just saw she wears yellow gold -- I guess she won''t care for the antique one.

I''d check into that GOG stone, a lot of bang for buck there.

I really don''t see a problem with size over cut.... if that''s what she wants, that''s what she should get.... just make sure you get it from a vendor with a lifetime upgrade policy so that when she does kick the bucket (hopefully in a very long time) you can get something smaller and better looking :D

now to clarify - it''s not what I would do, it''s not what you would do - but if that''s what she wants, just make sure you buy yourself insurance and get that upgrade policy lol

I just wanted to say thanks for all the replies. By the time my parents stopped hemming and hawing over when they wanted it, how much to spend, how big she wanted the J I1 that JulieN suggested was gone. However, Charlie from GOG suggested a 1.76ct F I2 Solasfera. He said it is one of the best I2 any of them had ever seen and most of the inclusion could be covered with a prong.

weight 1.76
7.82 x 7.84 x 4.79
depth 61.3
table 54.1
pavilion angle 40.9
crown angle 34.6
girdle thin to medium (faceted)
culet none
polish very good
symmetry very good

I''m not sure that I would be happy with a I2, but my mom said that just as long as it wasn''t ugly she was happy. The best part, this little baby came in at under $6500

Hey cool, you saved your mom from frozen spit and it looks like you found her quite a diamond for the money! Please share pictures of this when she receives it.

Wow, great price! Can''t wait to see the actual pictures!

Ah, I guess the first one wasn''t meant to be. The second stone looks good. I''d feel funny about an I2 if it was for an ering.

BUT your Mom is older and really seems to know what she wants.

Now for a right hand ring with a vendor that upgrades it I might try it...

Funny! I was just thinking about this thread yesterday and wondering what ever happened! Great deal for your mom!! Can''t wait to see pics and hear how it looks in person!

Congrats for your mom, I think this diamond might be a nice compromise between quality and size for her specific tastes. To the natural observer it should be very sparkly and beautiful.

your mom is so lucky to have you!! great job finding this stone!

i''m so happy for your mom! she''ll be the envy of ALL her friends!

so how are you planning to set it?

Your Mom cracks me up! I know exactly how she feels (I''d wear an I2 too!) The only difference is that I would definitely not sacrifice cut.

That site has sweet search capabilities.

I just wanted to give a quick update.

My mom wasn''t sure what kind of setting she wanted so I emailed her a bunch of pictures of rings that reminded me of her. One ring was a Carl Blackburn that I didn''t think she would like, but it just screamed mom to me. Of course, that was the one she picked and I had to tell her that the ring alone was about all of her budget. Wellll.... a couple days later Pearlman''s had their 20% off day. Even with the discount and a bumped up budget it was still to much, but Dad seeing how much Mom loved it got it anyway. She is so excited. She should get it in about a month.

Here is a picture. Her ring will be 18k yellow gold with platinum prongs. It will be 7.5mm wide (her diamond is 7.8 so there will be a little overhand)

Oh I LOVE this setting!!! I seriously considered it myself. I can''t wait to see pictures and I hope your mom will be very hapy with it!

That''s a cool setting! Wow, your mom has come a LOOONG way since the frozen spit idea. I can''t wait to see the finished product! She will be the envy of all her friends.

Wow, what a gorgeous setting. Please come back with pics of your mom''s ring, it''s going to be gorgeous. She will be thrilled.

I think that setting it INCREDIBLE! So beautiful and original, and what a way to do a thicker band! I can''t wait to see it!

I love the 18k and plat combination--sounds gorgeous. Nice job!

You did a fab job for your mom on that diamond. Isn''t it funny how a person can remind you of a setting, and then that''s the one they want.

How sweet is your dad to get just because she wanted it. That''s a big AWWWWW factor. I cannot wait to see pics of the finished project. Hm an I2 Solasfera, Wow, bet you''ll never see the inclusion for the sparkle.

shay

That''s great news. I''m glad she''s getting the stone and setting she wants.
