Help Me Pick a Tsav

I'm looking for a Tsav, over 2 carats. I'd like to go over 3, but haven't seen many around. A couple that I'm looking are;

Are you looking for something with a blue modifier, yellow modifier or closer to a pure green hue?
I would reach out to Jaimeen of PrimaGems. Don't bother with their website because they do not list the better quality gems online.

Thanks for the info. I'm looking for either pure green, or a very slight yellow modifier. No blue at all.

+1 on that, and that said, I haven't seen a tsav yet that wasn't absolutely beautiful!

Okay, a summary of what I *think* you seek:

1) 2.5 ct or larger tsavorite or Merelani Mint (same material, but the mints are lighter; its often semantics however. Look at thread by endlesssummer who is getting a "Mint" cut by JW and it sure looks like it could either be considered a light tsav or a dark Merelani)

2) Not fussed on shape but seem to be drawn to ovals;

3) Not fussed on precision cutting;

4) No blue modifier, prefer yellow

Off the top of my head, without knowing all your answers, I would say check the following sources 1) John at Gemrite. For a long time, he had tsavorite that had a yellowish tone to it. His cutting is excellent so if he happens to have some, you might be in luck; 2) Lisa Elser - she travels and acquires her own rough. Her catalogue had several. Caveat: she is located in Canada - don't know if that presents a challenge for you. 3) Roger Dery - another one who sources his own rough. 1. Mint is a bit lighter than I want.

2. Oval, cushion (not square), pear shape are OK. Not round.

3. Precision cut would be nice, not required.

4. Yellow or no modifier at all.

5. Medium, don't want to go too dark.

6. Eye clean preferred, but inclusions OK if they don't distract.

7. Under $3kis preferred, but up to $5k for an awesome stone.

I couldn't help but notice that some of these stones look pure green with a few actually looking a bit on the yellow side of life.

I, too, am surprised at the colour quality of the AJS tsavorites. Looks like a potential source for Andelain.

I highly recommend Prima for tsavorites and mint garnets.

They list that the pics are taken in 5k daylinght, whatever that means. I wonder how the stone will look in real like?

The type and strength of light matters when viewing coloured stones and 5000 Kelvin is considered "daylight" and is what you are most likely to view the gem in. I think the Prima tsavorite has good potential (not too light/dark), the cutting will make for a brilliant and lively gem. Since returns might be a challenge for you, I would follow up with additional pictures, in particular, something between the back of the fingers/hand.

I love the shape, althought I want bigger than that. The color on that looks like it has a hint of blue, though. That's the same thing I aw when I looked at AJS Gem's pics. I wonder if that's not intentional, though, because the blue modifier seems more expensive than the yellow.

Just a warning, that stone has a medium sized window in the middle. If you want a peridot, you should see what rough Barry Bridgestock has - he seems to get a lot of Arizona peridot rough, and he has beautiful cuts. This is smaller than you were wanting, but you should definitely ask him if he has more.

I think you prefer a yellow secondary color if you love the peridot. That's your preference it seems, which is fine. Yes, the blue secondary does raise the value on tsavorites. It's rarer and more in demand. However, you should buy what you like.

Just a word of caution with peridot. They are softer gems, and they also don't have the luster and brilliance of a well cut and polished garnet. They're more glassy looking IMO. Of course Barry Bridgestock is a fabulous lapidary and if you do get one from him.

If I did get the peridot it would have been just as an extra stone, not to make a custom ring with. I'm going after something really nice for this, even though it'll cost a lot more than that peridot.

It's interesting, because I'm used to seeing Chrome Tourmaline as a darker/deeper green. Maybe someone more experienced can comment on it?

No matter what, if you decide to go for a peridot, I'd go for precision cut. It's a plentiful stone in the color you like, and it's relatively inexpensive compared to the others species you're looking at. Gene may have some rough too: http://precisiongem.com/Gemstones/rapidcart/peridot.html

Its probably real, but it's so cheap because it's flat as a pancake for that face up size and has a rather large window, to put it nicely. 11 x 9 x 4.50.

Never heard of the vendor, but that doesn't mean anything.

I'd hold onto your money. That stone is going to look like a piece of stained glass, and will only sparkle around the edges.

Don't feel bad about walking away from this one too; small window and a medium sized bowtie. I also shy away from gem shapes with pointy ends for 2 reasons:
1. Most tend to concentrate colour at the points/tips so they are either really dark or the colour difference compared to the rest of the body is obvious.
2. Tips are at risk for damage/chips, more so since coloured stones are softer than diamonds.
