I found 2 pairs of studs and I can’t decide which to go with. Size vs Cut. Both cost about the same.

OEC studs, 0.6ctw, 4.35mm FG VS/SI
MRB studs 1ctw, 5mm GH SI

The OECs are in great condition for their age, a very close match in size and color.

I also have 0.3ctw and 2ctw lab MRB studs. These will be my third pair.

What would you pick and why?

Also voting old cuts because they are rare, especially in higher color grades. MRBs are much easier to find.

Are the MRB studs natural diamonds or lab?

I sometimes think the MRB show up a bit better on the ears but you would have to see both pair to make a good decision. The MRB’s are larger though so they would probably be my choice.

I think for studs size is more important than cut style - you won’t be able to see them much on your ear anyway! I’d do the larger MRBs or hold out for studs in a different shape (personally I like ECs also for studs).

Do you have any other old cut jewellery? I'm only asking because it is very different especially at a smaller size it's harder to appreciate the faceting difference. Will they be worn together with other studs i.e. are they for a second piercing? It's hard to compete with the sparkle of a mrb.

If you're into old cuts then I'll suggest get that.. if it tires you then you can always reuse them as side stones in a 3 stone ring.

I would love a pair of Asscher cut studs but I want at least 6mm/2ctw. It's so hard to hold out for them and these other studs are within reach now.

I have small old cuts in other pieces I don’t wear everyday. I know what to expect for this size and I prefer the big flashes over MRBs.

Thanks for the input everyone! I'm going with the OECs.

I'll ask the jeweler if they can replicate the original 6 prong crown setting.
