This stone was a bright baby pink, emerald cut, with distinct dispersion in the emerald cut facets. It reminded me of costume jewlery as it was certianly big and bold It showed flashes of yellow, greens and blues. We saw this stone in very dim lighting; and it was still very dispersive. The owner did not know the name of it, as she inherited it from her aunt and she has a necklace and earrings to match. It was set in Silver and had been worn frequently as the band was not very well taken care of/smooth. It had extremely high clarity. UNFORTUNATLY there was not the opportunity to take a photo. It was in the 6 to 8 carat plus range; i'd guess.

I am thinking: Pink Zircon, or Kunzite. maybe topaz.

What are the experts thoughts?

I'm not an expert but I'd say Topaz or more likely a simulant of some description (especially as it's set in silver). I may be wrong but with older items, it would be unusual to find precious gemstones set in silver. Not unheard of but not the norm either.

Kunzite in the colour you describe would be hard to source for a set.

Pink Zircon? Highly unlikely - it's not easy to come by so in that size and for a set? No.

Sounds like cz. It might have been brand name cz, and that's why she couldn't remember the name. The last store I worked in had all sorts of cz in silver.

I agree. Few coloured stones have high enough dispersion to through off rainbows - sphene, for example - and it would be hard to find those in large sizes, perfect clarity, a set and inexpensive enough to be set in silver.

Based on the fact that it's huge, very dispersive, pretty hardy over the course of many years, flawless, and that it even comes in matching sets leads me to suspect that it is pink ice (coloured CZ).

Hi, all! The description you give, by all accounts, points to CZ like the others have said.

Was it one of those mystic topaz things? They are very rainbowy and flashy. Some kind of coating on the stone gives it the colors.

I was thinking mystic topaz too.

CZ is also my first thought. Pink Zircon if it was not so rare. Best regards, Lee

CZ, YAG, high RI glass even (some can get to 2.1 now and be quite dispersive), synthetic sapphire, all prime candidates.
