First thank you all for all of your help. I found a diamond that i might be interested I will list the details below but first let me tell you what I am looking for. I am not a diamond expert, heck I know nothing about diamonds and neither does my girlfriend. I was looking for an about 3 carat round diamond that would look white and clean to me and her. Not under a loop and not even under close visualization because who is going to look at it that hard? Definitely not her friends or mine, but I want it to look good. I wanted to keep it under $15,000. Here is what I found:

This has a European EGL certificate (I would have preferred US but not in this price range), It is round (3.24 ct), J and SI2.

The diamond has ideal proportions and measurements, certified “Tolkowsky Cut”, this is as good as diamond can be cut, the diamond faces up nice and white, is exceptionally bright and is 100% eye clean, it is also 3.24 carats, a very sought after size and quality especially for the price.

The diamond features a 62.5% Depth, 58% Table, Polish and Symmetry – Very Good, No Culet or Fluorescence, Tolkowsky Cut, Medium Faceted – Girdle, the diamond measures 9.47 x 9.41 x 5.90mm.

I have not taken the diamond yet. They have a 30 day return period. What do you guys think? I am just concerned because of the J color and the unreliability of EGL Europe?? All comments and opinions welcome, Thanks, Mark

Mark,

Grading by European EGL does not mean that it’s wrong. It may just mean that it’s a bargain. If you are not confident in the grading, spend some of your 30 days to take it to a professional appraiser and get it checked out. That's why they're giving you the time.

Yeah, I''d use that time to check it out in person and then have an appraiser look at it. SI2 means you might be able to see inclusions, particularly since the stone is so big.

Worth a look at if you can absorb the costs of sending it back if it''s not suitable. Sounds like it could be a bluff stone. Not great on paper - but a lot of bang for your buck. Just outside of tight parameters for ideal. Does the cert list any crown and pavillion %?

Have you asked what type of inclusions and where are they located? True enough, larger stones will show more stuff. Can you live with the stuff you see is the issue.

I have a 3.01 H, SI2 EGL-graded stone that checked out and is tremendously beautiful as well as eye clean. But what they say is true--you need to be careful with foreign EGL certs becasue thay can be "soft." Like others have said, check it out...could be a lucky find or a dud--if you're willing to spend a few bucks and do a little legwork to find out, it might be worth it.

Note The dimensions are a bit short of an Ideal cut 3.24 stone--My 3.01 is 9.31 X 9.37 ... ?

Good luck, I hope it''s a beauty and not a dud!!

Be sure to take a good look at it. I am going to take a STRONG guess that you will be able to see the SI2 with the unaided eye on a 3ct SI2. That would be true of a GIA stone also, but I would be willing to bet money on it with an EGL stone. Still, it could be great, it could be not so great. Ask for photos if they have them before you spend money on shipping.

The crown Height is 15% and the Pavillion is depth is 43% under comments it says "tolkowsky ideal cut" I have a copy of the certificate if anyone wants to see it, if that would help?? Thanks all, mark

I am suprised that no inclusion shows there... but miracles do happen, no ?

You might want to play with the stone a little and at the very least take a look at the thing with some magnification to locate whatever made the clarity grade as is. Not that some trace of inclusions is unacceptable - just to make sure they will not start bothering you once the lighting reveals them or you learn where they are and can pick them up.

J color on that cert may well be a lower "K" in GIA's terms... or even "L". If you have seen this stone and you like the looks, than the same look must have different names from GIA (at least for color, if not for clarity as well) for some similar price.

Not sure what more the cert can say aside the grades and proportions you have already listed. I am curious what could those lucky inclusions be that they don't show at all ! The clarity plot might help with that bit, but a picture of the diamond would do even better.

As far as I know, of course.
