I am probably like a lot of others that maybe on this site,

I am looking at engagement rings and want to find out what I should research, questions to ask, stores online and off line that I should look at to make my decision?

Also any other input/suggestions that will help make this as painless as possible.

Thanks for helping this fish out of water! :)

First read the tutorials here on cut. The cut of a diamond is key to buying a beautiful stone. Next tell us your budget, what shape you are looking for etc... We will be more than happy to help this fish out of water,

budget?

does she like white metal or yellow metal?

what''s her ring size?

Thanks so much for everbody''s feedback, I am going to jump on the tip section right away.

Any suggestions on how to get her ring size?, and should I follow that silly motto about spending 3 months salary?

I am thinking of budget, but I guess I am wondering what the average price range would be?

Thanks Again!

Price range is not something we can advise you on.

What can you comfortably afford?

What are her expectations?

Are the two compatible?

Kaleigh,

Thanks for your thoughts,I read over the information on Cuts, and I also looked at the Tips too. As far as the budget, she is looking at an Antique engagement ring. I have done some quick research but what would be reasonable for the "budget".

Thanks to all!

Eeee...I think 1K is a minimum if you have a job and aren''t over your head in debt.

Max would be however much liquid money you have (currency, savings account, checking account.)

Do you have any idea of the size diamonds any of her sisters or friends have to get an idea of what she might be expecting? It''s hard for us to give you a price range if we don''t know whether you''re thinking half carat or 2 carats!

I think the 4 C''s tutorial is very informative and has lots of pictures, so check that out as well (they have great diamonds, too!):

No, spend what you can comfortably afford, realizing that things like buying houses and cars, and maybe kids, etc will come along. Make sure you have a comfortable cushion in case someone gets sick or there is an emergency. You can always "upgrade"

later!

The tutorials are VERY helpful, thanks for the referral.

Another question, short of taking one of her rings, any suggestions on how to get her ring size?

Thanks!

how do I find out her ring size?
If I am going to make it a surprise what do you suggest?

I know this is older, but what you do you suggest as a way to find out my GF ring size?

if you have no experience with rings, don't even try to guess it. even if you do, it's not a good idea.

if she has no rings to steal or no one who knows her size, or the other usual sneaky ways, maybe an alternative is to ask her mom/sisters/other blood female relatives of about the same build. my mom, her sisters, my sister, and I all wear within about a half size of each other. you'll still need it sized again, but for the purposes of the asking, it should suffice.

Thanks that is a great Idea, I should be able to ask or talk to my future brother inlaw since he is married to her older sister and they practically look like twins.
(so do you suggest that I get the ring a half size larger than her sisters, so that when I have to have it resized later it wont be a problem? or doesn''t it matter?
Appreciate your thoughts!

I know this is older, but what you do you suggest as a way to find out my GF ring size?

You can do a forum search for past suggestions. Pricescopers are pretty clever. Here's a list we put together for clients who ask...

A. If she has a ring that she wears on the correct finger and leaves it off, even for a moment...

1. If you can bring one of her rings to the jeweler without arousing suspicion, this will probably be the safest course of action.

2. Offer to take her jewelry to be cleaned and have the jeweler measure her ring at the same time.

3. Put it on your own finger. Push is down as far as it will go and mark the spot with a pen. Show that mark to a jeweler who will measure it for you.

4. Trace the inside of the ring on a piece of paper which the jeweler can use to determine the size.

5. Make an impression of the ring in a bar of soap, a piece of clay or even a piece of bread.

B. If she has such a ring but never seems to take it off...

Buy a box of pizza mix and have a pizza night. Get your hands both in the dough. Now the ring she is wearing must be removed and cleaned. Offer to have it done for her (this is one of my favorite ideas).

C. If she does not have a ring for the correct finger...

1. Tell her you are buying a simple ring for your mother, sister (etc) and ask for her assistance in picking it out. While at the jeweler's find out her size.

2. If you think she will suspect this, one of her friends can be of assistance. It’s not uncommon for one friend to ask another for their ring size as a matter of curiosity. Just be sure you choose a friend who can keep a secret.

3. If you don't trust her friends, employ one of your own who can keep a secret.

We'd love to hear additional suggestions.

Cut a few-mm thick piece of your business card off along the long edge. When she''s sleeping, grab her hand and wrap it around the finger, marking where it overlaps with a pen, then measure and compare to standard sizing tables.

That''s what I did.
