I''m a pharmacy student and my girl of almost 3 years has been giving me the ultimatum! With graduation still a year away then followed by a residency, this engagement ring needs to happen now and it has to come from my student loan money.

And to top it off I''m new to the whole picking diamond thing...

I could really use some expert help! I''ve been doing a little reading on diamonds and this forum, and been getting the feeling that I should be shooting for something like this:

0.5-0.65 carot
G-I color
ideal cut
VS1-SI1, eye clean

I''m trying to keep my budget for the under $2K (setting $500, diamond up to $1500). I visited James Allen, Whiteflash and Danforth website, but the choices are way too overwhelming. All the pictures, ideal scope and all, just makes me scratch my head. Can anyone help me limit my choices/criteria down a little more?

I thank all you experts in advance.

i like that diamond from whiteflash the most, and then the one from good old gold that strm found. Great picks!

The last one is borderline h&a the top 2 are h&a if that is important to you.

is it because the 11, 5 and 7oclock hearts are not aligned up very well ??
The heart at 6:30-7 is twisted and there is no separation of the heart and the pavilion arrow head.
It has some yaw.
That is the main one that puts it on the border and into near-h&a

thank you all, especially to strmrdr.

Unfortunately, the whiteflash one is reserved, and the 3rd is not available. And #2 would leave me with almost no money left for the setting. $2000 is pretty much all the student loan money I got after paying my tuition.

To be honest, I don''t really care if it''s hearts and arrow or not if it doesn''t translate into visible difference. I just want the stone to look good on my girl.

Thank you all.

Basically any of the 3 vendors above can put you into a very well cut diamond and setting for $2k in that size range.
Look over the policies and pick a vendor and put them to work would be my advice.

hey, thanks! I called and found out that the whiteflash stone was actually available. They said it was eye clean over the phone, and I decided to put it on hold. This looks like it. Thank you all everyone, especially to strmrdr

Now the quest for rock is pretty much over, the hunt for a setting begins. Traci at WF said they can pretty much get any setting, not just the ones on the website. That good because the ones they have is either very traditional or expensive.

Anyone know where's a good place to look for lots of settings with reasonable prices? And with a round stone of 0.62 carat, what should I look for in a setting to make the stone stand out? 4 prong, 6 prong, +/- sidestone?

Damn, I'm a little worked up and excited now. Thank you all for your help!

A quality setting in your price range is going to be pretty simple.
Either 4 or 6 prong is fine.

Can you tell us what kind of look you want in a setting?? Plain, or with some stones... etc... I know your price range just don''t know what look you want...

Well, I couldn't keep it a secret and showed her the diamond, and asked her to pick the setting. She got it narrowed down to 3 choices, but couldn't decide on preference.

one option is just the traditional 14k white gold setting from WF. This way it's fast and affordable. She probably can get the ring before she fly home down in texas October 1.
number1

She likes these too, but worries about how much more WF will charge to get these, and also she won't be able to show it off to her family.

number3

Now, she has skinny fingers, size 5. Will small ring size make #2 or #3 look weird?

I get the feeling she likes 2 and 3 a bit more than 1, but also want to get it fast so she can break the news. I think I'll ask WF how quickly and how much it would cost to finish the ring with 2 or 3 and go from there.

Hi everyone. Need to make a really quick decision.

WF hit a snag. Just when I thought when the diamond was good and decided. Traci at WF called me back couple of days ago and said the original 0.618 Carat (link) diamond had a crack in it(?). Wierd...

The lady at WF was very nice to me over the phone, and did offer this diamond
(link) which is 1 color and clarity grade higher than the original one at the same price. So I don't want to think that they are pulling a fast one on me.

But I do have a few concerns, and hope good souls of this forum can help me.

(1) the light performance map in the AGS certificate seems to missing contrast arrows at 1:30 and 7:30.

(2) the hearts pictures seems to have few artifacts in 11 and 4 o'clock.

(3) the photo of the diamond have extra shadows near center, right side 2-4 o'clock.

I guess the main question is, does the new diamond look good or should I be looking else where? I need to make a decision quickly.

You guys have been great and I trust and value your advice. Thank you.

Hey,

That .613 ct diamond WF linked you looks amazing to me. I think they messed up on the picture for the AGS certificate... but whiteflash got it right on their ASET and IS. The diamond looks amazing and I think you will be very impressed! I say go for it!

VS2 should def. be eye clean, i''d ask them if you want.. but there shouldn''t be anything to worry about in the hearts image.

Don''t need to care about the light performance map on the AGS report when you can see the real thing. That is a computer generated ASET and is known to shown this kind of quirks.

Probably some inclusion reflection around the hearts.

No idea what you mean by shadow.

I would go for it.

I would go for it if I were you. WF''s ACA diamonds are gorgeous. Having owned a couple of them myself, I can say that from first hand experience.

Thank you all! You guys are a real lifesaver to a nerd like me.

If you guys have any questions about medications or how best to treat for any illness with meds, give me a shout. It''s the least this pharma.D student can do in return.

Cheers.

You did a great job! A WF ACA H VS2 is a totally safe buy!!! Please come back with pictures of the finished ring!!!
