Hi everyone!

I have edited my original post to incld the details of a second diamond I am now considering. Please give me your thoughts as to which is the better diamond / better value. Diamond A is DCLA certified (Australian) and diamond B is GIA.

Diamond A (response below has been that this is a worthwhile stone)

72 points, G colour, SI2 clarity, 5.76 x 5.71 x 3.55 , nil flurescence

Depth 3.55mm 61.8% VG
Table 3.11mm 54.2% VG
Crown Height/angle 34.7` 15.9% VG
Pavilion Angle 40.5` 42.3% VG
Girdle 3.3% Medium VG

The price is $AUD3800.00 and it is DCLA certified (australian) http://dcla.com.au/main.htm

Diamond B

75 points
5.93 x 5.89 x 3.63
Depth - 61.4%
Table - 55%
Girdle - thin to medium
Cutlet - none
Polish - good
Symmetry - Very good
Clarity - SI2
Colour - G
Flurescence - None
Price - $AUD3600

Am I better to go with Diamond B as it has the GIA certification rather than Diamond A with the DCLA although Diamond A seems to come up with better results?

Newbie here who needs help ascertaining whether this diamond is worthwhile.

72 points, G colour, SI1 clarity, 5.76 x 5.71 x 3.55 , nil flurescence

The price is $AUD3800.00 which probably won't mean much to most, as you all seem to be in the USA. Basically wanted to know if the cut/dimensions seem OK or way off. I'm afraid this is all the info I have.

Thks so much! ----------------

AUD$3800 equates to USD$2693 at today's exchange rate.

Is this stone from an australian B&M or online vendor? Is it certed? Will the vendor be able to provide you with a sarin report for this particular stone? Like zeytoun said, crown & pavilion angles will be even better, and these will be in a sarin report.

Well, the depth is 61.8% from the measurements you provided, so at least it's not a typical deep stone that you might find at the mall and should have a spread (size) similar to most well cut diamonds of that carat weight. As other's have pointed out, though, without looking at the stone, it's tough to give a meaningful opinion on the cut without some basic sarin data, or even table/depth percentages and crown/pavilion angles.

Thanks everyone for your replies so far. I will ask the seller about the other details and post when I have them.

This is not from a shop in a mall - he is an independant diamond dealer/wholesaler, not online. There are not many online diamond dealers in Australia. I would love to buy online from USA, but I am wary of loss in transit, and taxes/duties when it gets here would probably negate the costs savings.

oh, the certification for this diamond is DCLA (an Australian certification)

I have done some research on this and found out that all you pay is 10%gst and AUD$50 for processing fees.

Hello,

We bought a diamond online about 3 weeks ago from Melbourne Diamond Exchange - the website is http://www.diamondexchange.com.au

My diamond is 0.7 carats, F colour, VS2 and an Ice Ideal cut. It was $4300AUS and came with GIA certification and an Ice Certificate which had all the sarin details on it. The best thing about this website is that you can search for diamonds based on size, colour, clarity, price etc and most or many of the diamonds listed show the sarin details. You can then enter the data into the cut advisor on pricescope and see what comes back

My diamond scored excellent on everything except light return (very good) and the nice thing about it is that it has a diameter of 5.87 - 5.90 so looks more like a 0.75 or 0.8 stone (that was the selling point for me to choose this one over another almost identical one). It looks gorgeous in person as well, which was a relief when buying unseen

So anyway I would recommend checking the website out, you'll at least then be able to comparison shop and get an idea of what is available online in Australia....

Thanks Jadeleaf and JennaJ!\

I have edited my original post to incld more information. More comments please everyone?

Scores VERY well on the cut adviser!!

0.5, Ex/Ex/Ex/VG

There is a disclaimer on the cut adviser that most people might prefer a diamond with a score closer to 1.5 than a low score like the 0.5 of the diamond you found. According the pros, diamonds with extremely low scores tend to loose some contrast that enhances the look of the diamond. If you've seen this diamond in person and it caught your eye, then that would not be a problem.

The price is in line with pricing of comparably cut diamonds available thru Price Scope Vendors.

Sounds like you may have found a keeper!!

Also, the Melbourne Diamond Exchange that has been mentioned,...... MDX is a regular contributor on the Forum. Very knowledgeable and friendly. They also cut diamonds. And, Garry Holloway, CutNut, is also in OZ with 2 B&M's. Garry is the man behind the Ideal Scope.

bump

have edited original post to add another diamond's details for your opinions

thks!

To really do an apples to apples comparison, you still need the crown and pavilion angles of the second stone. It looks promising, but those are key to knowing what kind of light return it might have.
