While I wait for my first lightning ridge black opal to arrive from australia in 2 weeks, I've decided to pass time by brainstorming settings.

I think opals feel so magical, and I'd love to set it in a ring that evokes magic, mystique, and fantasy! Like something an elf from Lord of the Rings would wear. Or a wizard from Hogwarts lol.

Anyone want to help me gather inspiration pics for a setting?

The opal is 7x6mm.

Here's some photos of the opal and the link to the video

I LOVE LOVE all of the inspiration pictures that you posted but my favorite are the top two, the first seemingly to mash more with what youre going for.....also patina on gold....drool.....

This will be such a magical ring!
Let me go dig in my ginormous etsy favorites folder...theres bound to be some inspo pictures there.

I found these that would qualify as "magical" and "elven" (:
Also, a setting as such is perfect for your opal.
Opals are in the very least magical stones. Theyve been used for centuries to reverse bad luck and counteract the evil eye.
Some even believe that you can tell the future with an opal or moonstone in your mouth on the full moon.
They are a creative stone, used to help inspire artists in all of their endeavors.
They're colorful glittering disposition has been inspiring humans to create as equally glittery lives.

This one is just for inspiration as its in SS but I love how the artist used the twisting branch texture with those little leaves to frame the gemstone.

This one is a very literal interpretation and a little odd but still neat none the less haha

Your opal would look stunning in this setting!

Another one from the above designer, all of her stuff is pretty whimsical but i could imagine your stone in a modified version of this ring. With your opal set horizontally (:

Oooh...what a pretty opal! I can’t wait to see more pics when you get it! And your inspiration rings are truly enchanted.
I found a couple on Etsy that might fit the bill...

https://etsy.me/2KrcYUc

Both are different from your inspo pics but may have elements that work. I’m so excited for you!

Oooo, maybe a opal AND moonstone ring. I have a moonstone from Barry that still needs setting. Hmmm

Hehe, I wonder if @Niel is around. She always has the BEST inspiration pics. She helped me pick a new home for my FLY marquise diamond that'll hopefully be done by christmas.

Oh no! Haha what did I do?!
I bet theres some magical way to incoorporate those two stones in one helluva ring that is still tasteful...even if the stones are different sizes!
If the moonstone is the same shape as the opal but a little larger or smaller you could create a ring where the larger stone starts closer to your knuckle and both are set horizontally with treebranches framing/bezeling each stone so itd have some symmetry with the little stone going to the larger. Does that make sense?

I think the moonstone is a bit larger, will check when I get home.
I think I know what you mean? lol

I have 2 toi et moi rings in similar styles already so I'd want it to look different from those

Erica Courtney does it, but I don’t think she does any outside stones. ? I couldn’t find the enameled pieces on her website, but I tried one on last year!

This is Art Deco, but I like the shoulders and how they bend and seem to wrap with the diamonds. My Australian crystal opal is on its way (10x8), and I’m also looking for inspiration! I’m thinking index finger ring.

I know you said you prefer no halo.... but this seems pretty magical! And you could be Cate Blanchett speaking to Froto with her mind, lol.

Just for fun since work is slow. I don't have the fancy photo shop to see what the effect would be with tri-color golds for the "leaves" instead of enamel

Pretty!! Your opal is 7x6, what size is your finger? The proportions will need tweaking...?

I wear a size 5.5
Hmm, for a 7x6mm opal I wonder how big the accent stones should be. 3mm? 4.5?

I would guess 3mm, especially with the bezel...? I’m not an expert in these things!

Haha me neither! I’ll have to try putting stuff next to the opal when I get it.

I’m really loving this ring:

Haha funnily enough as I’ve been looking at it, the more I think it’s just not my style. Beautiful as it would be, I like simpler looks.

That’s good that you recognize that! Can’t wait to see what you find you love! I actually saved it for my own inspiration!
