Does this appear to be a feather inclusion? My knowledge is minimal.

This photo doesn't help too much. It could be a feather or debris.
If you google "feather in diamond" or "diamond feather" and click on images you will see all sorts of feather photos.

Based on that one photo, I would have guessed it to be a dark crystal...

No way to tell from that photo. You need to take it to a jeweler who has a microscope.
