Hi there,

My BF and I have talked about marriage and even started looking at rings. The problem is that I do not know what I want in an ER! He likes the RB (I''m trying to pick up these PS acronyms) because of the sparkle. But everyone I know has a 1 ct RB in various settings. The one thing that I do know is I don''t want something that everyone else has. I am attracted to the emerald cut (EC?) but feel I can get more bang for my buck with a RB since with an emerald you typically need to get a higher quality stone due to it being step cut.

So in addition to not knowing the shape, I am concerned about cost as we also have a wedding to save for. Lastly, I''m concerned about my BF''s patience. We''ve already spent a few hours looking and I don''t seem to be getting any closer to knowing what I want.

Do you have any tips or ideas on how I can satisfy my desire for something different while managing costs and not driving my BF nuts? Any thoughts are appreciated!

Thanks, PS!

Hi, and welcome!

I think you first need to settle on a budget, that way you have some boundaries to stay in. I think if I had begun looking without a clear budget in mind I may have become overwhelmed because the possibilities are endless!

All I can suggest for figuring out what you want is to try everything on. You mentioned that you and your BF have already begun looking at rings, which is great! If you feel that your BF is starting to get impatient or going crazy with all the indecision, maybe you can go with a friend? It took quite a bit of trying on all different types of settings before I started to get a clear picture of what I wanted. Luckily BF was having fun looking at rings as well, and really enjoyed the process. When I would get frustrated because I didn't know what I wanted, he would just tell me not to worry and that we'd keep looking until we found the perfect one. Also, and I think you'll hear this from a lot of people, what I ended up with and what I went INTO the process thinking I wanted were two entirely different things.

If you're wanting a fancy shape to be different but still want to maximize sparkle, I'd recommend you look at the square H&A's from Good Old Gold, or an ACA Princess or X-factor stone from Whiteflash. Any of those would be gorgeous stones with TONS of sparkle.

You could also go the custom route, then you know for sure you'd have something unique! Many of the PS vendors could create something beautiful for you.

Or, if you're looking to get something VERY different, have you considered a colored stone? There are some absolutely amazing sapphire e-rings floating around PS. I'm not sure if that's something you'd be interested in, but I thought I'd throw the idea out there!

Good luck, and I hope you keep us posted on how it goes!

Sounds to me like you''re describing an oval. Heh.
You want the sparkle of a RB with the uniqueness of a EC= Oval.
Plus Ovals are budget friendly, at least more so than RBs...
Or a fat Marquis, but those are relatively hard to find from what I can tell...

If you like the step cut of the EC, I would also suggest asschers. They are kind of common on PS(at least it seems like it to me!), but out in the real world? You''re lucky if a maul store jeweler had any idea what it is. I think those are worth checking out too. Of course, the asscher faces up small, so if you''re a size girl, be cautious.

Yup. Those are my recommendations for diamonds. Don''t get me started on colored stones...

Just so you are up with the lingo chicky, engagement ring - ering

Only kidding!

Welcome to Pricescope. You are one lucky thing to find PS BEFORE a ring is purchased, you will get lots of great ideas here and there are heaps of us who will help you find ''the one''.

The best thing you can do is go shopping girl - try on as many settings and different shaped stones as possible, in all different sizes. Try to find really well cut stones to look at, they will give you an idea of how much they sparkle, and a true estimate of colour. Try Tiff''s if you have one local, or ask to see AGS 000 stones in B&M (bricks and mortar, basically a jewellery shop).

Search through the SMTR (Show Me The Ring folder) and have a look at other members gorgeous sparklies, you will get ideas of what you like and don''t like, but remember that things can look totally different when on your hand.

It might be an idea to set a budget, but we can pretty much always find a ring to fit your budget. When (and if lol!!) you decide on a shape stone, give us an idea of size, budget etc and we can start searching for a killer rock for you.

I have found that when deciding on an ering, it''s sometimes best not to tell SO (significant other) EVERY SINGLE detail

, my guy''s eyes blaze over with diamond talk now, he is such a cutie.

Save pictures, threads etc, so if you want BF to suprise you, you can print off some ideas, maybe make a ring book with what you like and don''t like and he can take it from there if you like, you give him the direction, but he can have the final say and you still get a suprise.

Good luck!!

I feel your pain a year ago I was in the same boat not knowing what I want, but now I have decided an RB in a solitaire setting which around my parts is not that common, I am a size and sparkle girl :).

You need to go try on loads of styles :) and get a feel for what you like and what he likes as well I would suggest a Princess of hearts as it has the sparkle of an Rb but a square shape or even possible a cushion a beautiful cushion is seriously yummy :) Radiants are also pretty cool as well :)

Have some fun with it I am sure you will find something that speaks to you :)

Can you tell us a little more about your taste? Do you like ornate, simple, antique, modern, etc.? What other kinds of jewelry do you wear or love? Welcome to PS!

I noted that you like the EC - if you like it then you should look into them further. Fancy cuts like EC''s generally go for lower prices because they are less widely popular and they are easier to cut.

One thing I did when I didn''t know what I wanted was to go online and seek out different settings. Once you find some settings you''re in love with, the cut might come to you. Good luck, and have fun!

Wow - you all have been so helpful! As for my taste, I do think I lean more towards the simple side vs. anything ornate. The jewelry I wear on a day-to-day basis are my diamond stud earrings or a simple necklace with my initial. That being said, I probably picture myself with a solitaire or a solitaire with a baguette on each side, but not much more. Since budget is a concern I think I would rather spend more on the center stone.

Definitely cruise around the SMTR folders. If you want something a little different, but like the sparkle and size of RB, Have a look at the Old European Cut Diamonds. (OECs) Chunky facets are delish. A simple antique setting with a GORGEOUS OEC is special AND unique.

Do a search or OECs and

Rockzilla has a GOREGOUS new OEC in a simple but elegant and unique setting- see her thread!

There are some huge OEC and other antique cuts FANS around here... myself included. A few nice sites to explore if they suit you...

antiqueengagementrings.com is one place to start!

Good luck!

Hey - shape of EC and sparkle=Radiant!!

Since someone mentioned the Asscher cut I just had to post one for you. I love this cut. I hardly ever wear jewelry and when I do is simple. I also don''t want what everyone else has and both Princess and RB are big around here so this is a unique and I think gorgeous option.

I like the idea of looking at sq H&A''s like another poster suggested. Also check out a Cushion cut. While they are popular on here I have never come across another person who has had one (yet).
