Hello everyone...

I have been reading pricescope for agers and now I finally get to put my knowledge into action....with your help!!

Planning on proposing in the next month but im stuck!

I have three rings that I was looking at...

My budget is up to $7500.... so was looking at diamonds for approx. 4000-4500.

Does anyone have any opinions about the rings? Should I go white gold or platinum?

Do you know what she likes? If not i would spend the most on the stone and buy a simple 4 or six claw solitaire setting in platinum. Either white gold or platinum is fine but white gold needs plating and platinum doesn't but is softer so it might sratch over time and need polishing. I think platinum prongs are a bit safer so the stone though

thanks for the reply.

She likes a bit of bling. I thought that would be the best way to go as you said, but I know she really likes pave settings and sidestones.

She would rather have a plain wedding band and a fairly flashy engagement ring.

So that rules out the solitaire unfortunately.

I personally like the BGD ring much more than the other two. For me, the other two don't have elegant lines. The two JA ones also might not look quite right with a wedding band because of the shape.

Just my humble opinion.

Going with 18k gold leaves you with at least $5.5k for the diamond. I guess everyone's question is - are you sure she'd like this style or does it make sense to wait and get her a temp setting so she can choose her forever setting?

If you're on a budget, there are many Beverley K and Gabriel & Co settings around $2000-2500 that have a lot of bling and perhaps she'd like to pick it out herself.

She really wants me to pick the ring....so I wanted to try and do it right the first time!

I have shown her photos of the JA scalloped setting and various fishtail pave a while ago and she liked both of them equally.....which did not help my decision! haha

I have seen photos of the fishtail settings from BGD on the forum and they look amazing....but there is something that I really like with the JA settings I picked. Maybe the bigger diamonds on the side I might like?

The problem is, I haven't seen a real life photo of either of them...and they always seem to look different in some way. The BGD fishtail looks awesome and I love the novela head, so that makes sense just to buy that one...but I cant stop looking at the JA settings.

Oh no too many options!!! And I haven't even got to the diamond yet!

I think a valid point is a wedding ring may not sit well with JA settings I was looking at....so maybe it narrows it down to the BGD pave setting or I do like the gabriel & co setting, it is kind of the best of both settings really.

Yes I do like the regal valentine.

I think I do prefer the fishtail though, so maybe the fishtail pave novela head in white gold is 2100.

Which leaves 5000 for the diamond, is this doable?

Or should I downgrade my ambitions for the setting?

I do really like the u shaped half eternity too actually!! But I prefer 4 prong, would it cost extra to change that?

Yes. No one asks what the carat weight in your setting is. EVERYONE wants to know how big your center stone is. And you CAN afford a 1 carat, so you should get one in this case.

Call and ask them about the prong change. I suspect it wouldn't be hard or cost you extra. Make sure you tell them upfront you are on a strict budget and want to know if the change can be made without any additional charge.

you mentioned that you liked the BGD pave setting and I wondered if you saw this one at JA for about 1/2 the price. I've had this same setting for just over a year and it's been very durable. Delicate but packs a punch because the pave is super blingy.

No similar. I just don't like peg heads like that one. Still, if you are on a budget that's definitely a place where you can sacrifice.

1600 for the setting.
7735 for the total. It's 235 over. So I would stick to settings that are around 1400. Also if you buy from the same place-- stone and setting you might qualify for an additional discount, so I would call BGD and ask them for one of the settings you liked -- like the U prong one and ask them if they will change the head to a 4 prong and if they can do that set for out the door 7500. I think they probably can.


If you buy from separate places you have to deal with shipping, insurance and setting fees.

So after considering what you guys said... I think im going to go with the french cut pave from JA. But I have asked if it is possible to get another head put on for the same price, if not I'm happy with the standard one but I do like the one from the link below better.

So that just leaves the diamond!! Yay!

So the budget is $6300 for the diamond I think. The cut is the most important thing to me. but hoping I can get a 1 ct with that budget.

Is I colour going to be ok? I think I have read that no one will notice, but just checking that's true?

Anyone got some suggestions from JA?

Lovely diamond. I'd be fine with a J and you'll have a great return policy if you aren't happy with it. I think it's a good idea to change out that head too. So... overall, I think you are doing great. Put the diamond on hold.
