Walking by the window of a local jewelry store, this ring caught my eye. The cut looks to be an asscher to me, but am not totally sure. It is on consignment and is 3ct, K color and SI1. It is not graded so I have no additional information on it. It looked beautiful by eye (and is a nice size!), but looking at its photo, it is dark at the 12, 3, 6, 9-o'clock locations. Is this due to windowing or lack of light reflection? I know the photos do not tell too much, but I am interested in hearing experts' thoughts on the stone. Is it worth getting more information on it or is it a dud?

well, I'm no expert, but yes it's an asscher (square step cut). It's impossible to give you any more information from the picture though, There could be alot of reasons that you're seeing the dark areas in the stone. Unfortunately there just isnt much more information that anyone will be able to give you about that. Karl K usually suggest, when ASET isn't available that you place the stone against a red background, the areas of the stone that show red back through the top will give you idea of the stones leakage. It's the only suggestion I have. Also if you decide to purchase this stone, I would have an experienced appraiser confirm that the stones cut color and clarity is the same as the store represented it. Good luck!

Its actually an emerald cut with little corners.
The rectangular center is a giveaway it has a keel and the culet doesn't come to a point.
The darkness is probably obstruction.
Cant tell much else from the picture.
If your interested get more and better pictures.

If you are interested, it wouldn't hurt to get more info from the jeweler in regards to price and refund policy.
