Help Finding a Ruby for an Ering

So my future BIL is thinking of proposing and has asked me to help him find a ruby for his girlfriend. And the first thing I thought was I better pop into the colored stone forum and ask for help after seeing all the beautiful creations in here

The criteria I was given:

• Color: a true red (or close to it)

• Max budget of ~6k for the gem

• Would like a natural, unheated ruby.. but would not dismiss heated ones

• Shape: I think hes really interested in pears, but then again he would be open to any shape

• The carat size is not as important, but he has mentioned she is overly embarrassed by her man hands (as she calls it) so perhaps anything over a carat would suffice?

I have browsed most of the recommended vendors and I am completely lost. So here I am hoping you wonderful ladies can help me out.

I would recommend he looks at heated stones as a true red unheated is likely to be out of budget - let alone looking for a red, unheated pear-shape.

Definitely look for heated as Pandora as suggested as unheated is unlikely to be in budget especially as you want one of a decent size.

Pears are also less common so why don't you email a few of the vendors on the list you've already looked at? Gene at Precision Gem often has pretty rubies and may be able to help.

A quick search has found these. They may not be big enough but are within budget and some are unheated as an added bonus!

Thank you Pandora, I will keep this suggestion in mind. I have looked through all the recommended vendors listed but color stone is not my forte, and I would only have my monitor to judge

Hi Chrono and thank you. I have spoken with BIL and he is fine with heated since through his own searches he has realized an unheated ruby is way out of reach. I am trying to open him up towards other shapes, but I think that if we find a ruby in the right color the shape won't even matter anymore.

There are some rubies here within your budget, including 3 over 1 carat that have some kind of AGL cert. at the bottom (all unheated):

They have a 2 ct round (untreated) that does not look perfectly round on the bottom left, which I like for the color, and it can be hard to find a round shape in a ruby. There's also a 1.71 ct round (heated) that looks very round, but it does not have a cert. The 1.52 carat cushion (untreated) on the bottom right looks very clean, but I am not sure how pink it is. I would not want pink in a ruby. I've never bought from Gemfix, but others have and you read reviews by searching for "Gemfix" using the PS search feature.

I would definitely get an AGL cert. on a stone (if it does not come with one) to check that the treatments have been properly disclosed. You can ask the vendor to send the stone directly to AGL first if you want to get it out of the way. Make sure that your refund period includes enough time for AGL, and for you to receive the stone to determine if you like it. If you buy a Burmese stone, you may want to pay for a Prestige Report with origin because you are paying for the Burmese pedigree, but a report with origin is pretty expensive.
