Hi, Everyone! I am very new to diamonds. But you all are so helpful. I found another diamond ring I want to buy from a private seller. Any tips I could use to tell if its a real diamond or not...especially since its mounted? I was told he had an appraisal on it but from reading some posts I see that can be not so true sometimes. :) Please give me tips I can do. Thanks!

Will they allow you to take to your own appraiser before purchase? You might have to pay
for the appraiser out of your own pocket. And if all is well, you can pay for the ring and then the
appraiser will release the ring to you after the seller gives the ok.

Get the seller to meet you at an independant appraisers of your choosing so the appraiser can verify it is a diamond, there will be a charge for this. Are you in the US?

I live in Phoenix, Arizona. The seller told me we could meet at a jewelers. My husband said maybe we could go to a Kays or one of those jewelers in the mall to see if its real for free. But an actual appraisal sounds smarter since its costing a pretty penny. Thanks for the tip. I have learned so much already from everyone. Thanks a million! This ring is gorgeous. If I buy it I will post pictures for everyone to see....after all you all helped!

A jeweller can probably tell you whether it is a diamond or not but personally in this situation I would want an independant appraiser involved where my money is concerned!

If you meet at a jeweler''s, try to find one that has a gemologist on staff. The majority do not, particularly mall chain stores.

As long as you''re having it looked at, you might as well have an independent appraiser do the whole schmear. Best time to get an independent appraisal is upon purchase, not later.

There’s a list of appraisers at the top of the page under ‘resources’. For some people it’s difficult to find one nearby but Phoenix has several good choices who I’m sure can help you out. Let us know how it goes.

I live in AZ, I worked with a jeweler on my reset in Chandler though and they have a Gemologist/appraiser on staff if you want to travel that far by the Chandler Mall off of Ray Road & I-10 there is also a Jareds in the same complex as well.

ray rd and I-10...i can do that...what was the name of the place? I am going to have it appraised for sure.

http://www.coffinandtrout.com/ Coffin and Trout - they are a few stores east of Ann Taylor on the south side, maybe give them a call as well, I worked with Ed there, and they are super nice.
