Hi!
I am going to Italy on vacation (sooo excited!) and I am not sure about wearing my E-ring. I would ABSOLUTELY DIE if anything happened to it. My sister sent me a couple of "travel rings" CZ''s she uses to travel but it is hard to wear a CZ when you are used to looking at a gorgeous diamond! So, please tell me what to do!!!

ANY opinions are appreciated! Thanks! :>)

Having lived there for 8 years, I would be perfectly happy to wear a diamond ring without worrying (except in Naples...).

If you are in a situation where you don''t want to wear it, then put it in the hotel safe (the one with the conciege NOT the room one), I use a box that doesn''t scream ''jewellery''.

If I''m travelling outside Europe or the USA, or planning to spend a lot of time doing ''activities not conducive to bling-wearing'' then I have a plain gold wedding band. Especially in less developed countries, I think it''s not only dangerous, but also highly inappropriate to wear flashy jewellery, so I wouldn''t even wear a CZ or similar.

Hi!!!!!
Thanks for replying!
Naples IS one of the places we are going! What makes you say that about Naples? Is it not as nice there?

It can be dangerous, especially if you look like a tourist, lots of pickpockets etc - certainly none of my Italian friends were happy for me to go there. But then I lived in the North of Italy and they are rather biased there.

My mother had jewellery stolen in Rome and my father was pickpocketed there. I never had any problems at all - although I was more careful in Rome than in other places.

North of Rome is not a problem.
Naples is a disaster.

Drena wears all her Jewelry without incident in Italy many times.
but if you are the timid ''victim'' type - then take CZ

some friends of mine got robbed very badly in rome while on vacation. they had arrived via train and the husband had gone to some tourist center to line up a hotel. my girlfriend was minding the bags, with their money and travelers checks in her pockets. a group of kids - pickpockets - came up and surrounded her while he was in the tourist center. they seemed to work out pretty quickly that she was keeping her hands in her pockets and wouldnt remove them, regardless of what they did...so they just took my friends'' suitcases. just took them. right in front of her! by the time the husband came running back, their bags were all gone. they did have their money and travelers checks tho, and they were covered by insurance - but even so...!!

my sister had her watch stolen from her wrist in rome also. personally, i wouldnt take jewelry into that situation, and i am NOT a timid, victim type and my sister is a really intimidating woman.

Note to self.........Do not vacation in Italy....

I might as well just go to Mexico to get robbed, would be cheaper for me....

I never wear my jewels outside of the US (leave them at home in safe or at least well hidden).
(of course it doesnt go without saying there are places in the US that I would not wear them either -
I try to say out of those places though!)

Wow!!!
Thanks!
I guess I should leave them home. That is hard to do...being away from my rings....I am sure YOU ALLget it but DH and other family/friends do not understand.

From all of the online information I got while planning this vacay, Naples seemed nice. So funny! Well, I guess it is worth it to see Mt. Vesuvious, right?

I wore my ering and diamond earrings on vacation in Italy last year in Rome, Florence and surrounding and Venice. Not a single problem. If a neighborhood or situation looked sketchy I just turned the ring around so my diamond was in my palm.

Make sure you have a super insurance policy and wear your jewellery.

If you are worried about the area- turn the stone inwards.

If you have any concerns, leave them home. Better to be safe than sorry.

Haha! Most places are perfectly safe if you''re aware and smart about travelling. The same as most places, even in the US, can be dangerous if you''re not aware.

Hi leftfinger - I went to Italty last year, and spent plenty of time in the north and south (Rome, Positano, Sorrento, Florence, Pisa, Tuscany, etc) and I would have been fine had I had my engagement ring. It's smaller than PS average, so I don't think it's an obvious target for thieves.

I would advise against a CZ ring simply because those are often even more blingy and might put you in the position you were hoping to avoid. I just wore my plain white gold wedding band, and even left my original platinum wedding band at home since I didn't want to lose it.

I hope you have a wonderful time! What's your itinerary look like?

Women in Italy do NOT wear diamond erings. I wore a cheap colored stone ring so as not to stand out. No matter where you go you do not want to attract attention. Watch out for the Gypsies.

I have decided to wear a plain band (no stone whatsoever)....just in case.
I am going to feel so naked but I will get through it..

Thank you all very much for you help!

I travel with jewelry all the time (I do not get blinged out, I always stay minimal and usually wear studs and my e-ring and bring nothing else) and as long as you travel smart and avoid sketchy people, or places rather, I think you should be fine. Nowhere is completely safe, in or outside of the United States, just make sure you are always aware of your surroundings. I think you should be fine.

Happy travels!

Ditto! Make sure you are aware of your surroundings and don''t give off the impression that you are worried of getting robbed. I think thieves can pick up on these things and sometimes that can make that scared person a target. No CZ.
Have a wonderful trip!

If you own it, you should be seen in it.

Have a great time.

I am American living in Europe and my ring is probably above average size. I was just in Rome this weekend for 5 days and my rings is still firmly on my finger. I will be in Spain next weekend and it will be on. You have it to enjoy so enjoy! If you feel a little worried in certain areas just spin it around so the stone is not visible. It was so warm in Rome that my fingers got swollen so I would wish anyone good luck in trying to get it off. Have an AMAZING trip!

Is your finger still firmly attached to your hand?.......

Sorry, but plenty of them most certainly do - at least in the North of Italy. My ex''s mother wore a 3ct solitaire and most of my friends had decent sized diamond e-rings. However, they don''t walk around looking like tourists and know what areas to avoid.

First, let me tell you that you made a great choice with Italy as your holiday-destination. It is a lovely country.

On the other hand, I am often amazed by people being nervous about wearing their jewellery when traveling. If you leave it at home, chances are just as high that your house got burglared during your absence, I think.

When traveling, I think it is most important to try to blend in, not look like a tourist and avoid areas where you would not go in your own country either.

Live long,

I''ll be sure to tell my Italian friend, living in Rome, who has a 1 carat ring that women in Italy don''t wear diamond engagement rings. I do think the rings are smaller - as they are in most of Europe - but people still wear diamonds.

I disagree, too. I wore my rings there with no problems last year. (though not huge, but still nice.) And I saw plenty of Italian women wearing rings!

However, if you''re not comfortable, you''ll be happier if you leave them home. I have a plain platinum band that I wear, as well, but usually when I am on call.

Well, after much annoying debating (my husband put the adjective in, not me!) I decided to leave my girl at home. I had a wonderful time on my trip and I love Italy! I can see how Naples is a bit different than some other parts but I loved it all the same! I wore a band and while I missed Berta (yep! that''s her name) I felt better leaving her behind. The only thing is that in my pictures, there is an empty spot where she should be! :>)

Thanks so much for all of your responses!
I did lots of other people with bling there, so it is probably safe but I don''t regret leaving her!

I do not wear my e-ring out of the country. Just feels safer to leave it at home. But I do wear my wedding band.
