I know it''s like comparing apples & oranges, but I''m torn between 2 stones: an asscher & a round brilliant. The specs are below:

Asscher

2.14 ct
G, VS2
Depth: 64.4 %
Table: 59 %
Culet: none
Polish/symmetry: G/VG
Girdle: medium
Fluorescence: none
Measurements: 7.49 x 7.48 x 4.82

Round Brilliant

1.87 ct
G, VS2
Depth: 62.5 %
Table: 55 %
Culet: very small
Polish/symmetry: G/G
Girdle: thin-medium, faceted
Fluorescence: faint
Measurements: 8 x 7.86 x 4.96

Any thoughts or red flags on either stone? I''ve seen both stones in person & they are both lovely & compelling in different ways.

Thanks!

well, if you don't have any other info on either of the stones, AND you have seen them both in person and think they are both "lovely"...i would pick the RB since it will look bigger

though not "ideal".

A possible red flag on the RB might be the measurement, if stated correctly.........(8 x 7.86)...that is quite a bit of variation, I think!!

apples and oranges indeed. i understand your dilemma though!

do you have any ideas on settings? maybe that would help you to narrow down your choice. if you find a setting that you just *love* you could decide which stone would better compliment it. best of luck to you!

Thanks for your thoughts. KBerly, that''s a good point about the measurements on the round. Would that affect performance, or just make it look not quite round? (or both?)

While the practical side of me says I should go for the RB (it''s less expensive, looks bigger & has more sparkle), I think I might be leaning towards the asscher. I found a mounting that I adore that would work well for the Asscher. (good call, belle!)

It''s so difficult to choose!

Hi, Brightspot!

For me, it would be a no-brainer. But I''m an asscher freak. I love the "deep well" look of them...their special glow...

...and they''re so much more unusual thn RBs...

The asscher''s numbers sound good. The shape is imporatnt there as much as brilliance and only you can judge that with the stone at hand. The numbers do not tell much about how this one looks like in person.

The round may or may not be as nice as it could. Do you have any stats about it''s proportions or some other mean to compare it to some standard ?

How about the aparent size and the cost of the two ?

For me, even if the round would be the best H&A ideal cut, the asscher would win. Just like that shape allot more.

Widget,

I know what you mean about the "deep well" look of the asscher. I didn''t think I wanted one because they weren''t as brilliant, but when my jeweler put several stones of different cuts out for me to look at, I couldn''t take my eyes from the asscher. It just drew me in!

Valeria,

You''re absolutely right about seeing the asschers in person! I looked at 2 which were similar in size, but one grabbed me and the other didn''t.

After all I''ve learned from you PS-ers, I feel like I should analyze all of the data, get an ImageScope report, etc., before deciding on a stone. But once I saw this asscher, it just grabbed me. I guess I''m trying to make sure I don''t make a bad decision that is emotionally based. Who knew diamond shopping was such a science? (other than PriceScopers!)

You hit on the only thing that''s hanging me up--the apparent size & cost. The RB has a much larger spread & slightly larger apparent size, but is $2K more expensive as the weight is much lower.
