My 25th wedding anniversary is rapidly approaching. I have chosen a ring on a preliminary basis but am far from a diamond expert. I''d sincerely appreciate any help or suggestions (this is a large purchase for me).

I first bought my Wife a diamond when I was in college (.33 carat) when I had no money. Now, I want to upgrade her really well. I have been shopping for loose diamonds and have come up with the following (from a friend of a friend who is a diamond dealer in Chicago. He normally doesn''t sell to individuals, but to stores). Here is the deal:

> Round Brilliant Cut
> 2.78 Carats
> Measurements: 9.09 X 9.05 X 5.58 mm
> Proportions: Excellent
> Depth %: 61.5%
> Table %: 56%
> Crown Height: 14%
> Pavilion Depth: 43%
> Girdle Thickness: Medium Faceted
> Finish: Excellent
> Clarity: VS 2
> Color: G
> Photolum: None
> Ideal Cut

>PRICE: $24,750 (no sales tax)

Is this a good deal or not ? I think it is, but really don''t know. The certificate is from the E.G.L. Is that of concern (i.e. vs. the G.I.A.) ? Thanks very much for your input and take care....

looks like a very nice diamond, and a very nice price!!.....that''s quite an upgrade! your wife is going to be amazed i''m sure!!!

This looks like a very nice diamond. I would do several things to be sure. I''d try to get a sarin report that has all the measurements. Crown and pavilion %''s are much less accurate. THe sarin will also show how tighlty it is cut (how much the angles and diameter varies) which is nice to konw. I''d also get idealscope pictures or look at it through an idealscope if you''ve seen it live. Lastly, I''d be sure to have it appraised within a full, no questions asked, refund period by an independent appraiser. EGL has a reputation for being softer in it''s grading, but the recent grading study showed that not to be 100% true with EGL USA.

Lucky lady!
