Hi all

Long term viewer of this forum. Thanks to all for assisting with learning about diamonds. I have learnt so much from all contributors and so I would like to thank everyone of you.

I was interested in the following diamond which is my first purchase.

Idealscope and link is attached below. Is the Idealscope image ideal?

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.50-carat-e-color-vs2-clarity-ideal-cut-sku-126913

It is from James Allen and is a best true hearts cut but it's HCA is quite high at 2.5

Should I worry about this ? AGS documentation states all measures bar clarity are 0.
Is the light performance map on the AGS look ideal?

Would I need additional information such as Sarin, to further enhance my decision making.

Thanks
Fourcees

HCA penalizes diamonds with high crown/steep pavilion combinations, so it's not a perfect tool to use when evaluating diamonds that have a greater than 35% crown paired with a 40.9% or greater pavilion. The overall depth of the diamond is not too deep at 61.80, and the slight leakage around the table in the Idealscope image will probably not be noticeable in real life. I say "probably" (even though I'm pretty sure it won't be noticeable) because every pair of eyes is different. It looks like a nice stone, and JA has an excellent return policy.

Normally you don't even need to use the HCA on AGS 0 stones as they have already been proven to have ideal light performance. Looks like a nice stone!

Thanks ECf and lula

I was looking at the light Perofmrance map in the AGS report and can see some large green blobs near the centre . Is this a byproduct of the high HCA or does it separately show that there are some light dispersion issues with the diamond?

Also any one have tips on purchasing with James Allen?

Thanks everyone in advance

The ASET image in the AGS report is computer generated, I believe, so I don't put a lot of stock in those images. However, what's interesting is that the green blobs on the report seem to correspond to the lighter pink/white areas in the Idealscope. That is the "light leakage" I was referring to in my previous post. My guess is that you will not be able to see this little bit of leakage in real life. You are paying a premium for the hearts and arrows brand, though, so make sure these small deviations from "mathematical perfection" won't bother you. That's what we refer to as a "mind clean" issue around here, and each person is different when it comes to determining what is mind clean for him/her. I can assure you, that unless your girlfriend -- I'm assuming you're buying this ring for a woman -- is a science and math geek who has studied diamond cutting -- she will likely never notice these variations that the IS and ASET are picking up.

ETA: No tips on purchasing from JA, other than to say that in my experience JA is a very easy company to do business with.

OP - you probably know this already, but JA offers a discount to PriceScope members - I believe the amount of discount varies between 1%-4% depending on the diamond - so prior to purchase be sure to mention to JA that you are a PriceScope member.

Never use the HCA on AGS Ideal cut stones because AGS evaluation of light performance is more definitive information. I don't bother with the ASET image on the AGS report since it isn't an actual one. James Allen isn't quite as strict as some other vendors on their H&A designation, so consider that as you compare prices with other H&A vendors. Due to the small amount of leakage showing in the idealscope image, my guess would be that this stone would be at the level of WhiteFlash Expert Selection and not ACA. But still a very nice ideal cut stone.
