Hi everybody, this is my first post here at Periscope. This looks like a fantastic resource to ask a diamond-related question, so if you''ll all bear with me, I''ll fire away.

I recently proposed to my girlfriend, and am now engaged. The ring does need to be resized, but she would like a larger stone. I will cut to the chase and get to my question: the first ring I bought had three diamonds, and she preferred a solitaire, so my awesome jeweler and I decided that we''d use the larger stone, a 58 point HOF diamond, for the new engagement ring, and use the two smaller 44 point HOF diamonds for a pair of studs. It turns out that the new fiancee would rather have a larger stone and no diamond studs. So I am wondering if anyone can tell me the likelihood of being able to trade in those three diamonds--altogether coming to almost 1.5 carats--for a single larger diamond. I am going to call my jeweler tomorrow, but I would like to know if this is the thing that jewelers often do, or if I am nuts.

Thanks everyone, and take care!

Depends on your jeweler, but probably not much increase in the solitaire size as sub 0.5 carat stones are not worth that much, depending on the 4C, probably sub 1k each.

Welcome!

Best to ask your jeweller, some might and others might not, I hope your jeweller is agreeable though!

Thanks for the responses! I did call my jeweler, and he seemed amenable to the idea, although he wasn''t too sure about the store policy as his boss is away until Thursday. I guess I''ll find out then. Either way, reading your replies put my mind at ease. Thanks again!

Can the 3-stone ring just be returned and a solitaire bought with the money?

I agree with mowtownmama, you should see if they will allow you to return it for credit and buy what you want. If it was an item that was in the store''s inventory, it should not be a big problem. However, if they special ordered it, they may be reluctant. Most good business people want their clients to be happy. Good luck.

Well, by the time I went to get the solitaire, the refund time for the three-stone ring had expired. So I kept that band, and didn''t really end up losing money on that. That''s why I''m asking about trading up or selling those three smaller stones to purchase a bigger one.
