Hello everyone, new here.
Wasnt sure where to post an introduction, but I figured this would be the best place.
(unless i happened to miss an into section! i hope i didnt)

Just wanted to say hi, and that I plan on learning much about one of my favorite things: gems! Ive enjoyed them since i was a young''in - however, compared to most of you I still am.

thanks everyone :)

is there a thread to post one''s loose gems?
I have some of those :)
granted, I find it very difficult to tell what they are, since, ya know, a lot of gems come in a lot of different colors.

maybe I can get some identification?

or should I take it to an appraiser?

Hey Mag! WELCOME!

Ususally you can describe them and their color and saturation and it can be determined. For the stones that are similar you can actually find the Specific Gravity of them by dipping them in water and seeing how much is diplaced, then formulas... that's the lab way to determine without any real instruments other than a gram scale... :)

When you have the time, post pics but on a white background and in day light with a camer amacro setting on. That should be easy to identify that way, and then there are other tricks people here will tell you. Inclusions are a good giveaway, the lack of them and if there are a lot. Also, the structure of the stone if it's not cut... lots of methods!

This is a great book for beginners actually:

Gemstones (Smithsonian Handbooks) by Cally Hall

and also pretty good is this:

Gemstones of the World by Walter Schumann

Good book but not that inexpensive is :

Color Encyclopedia of Gems by Joel Arem.

It has photos of a lot of gems in the Smithsonian Collection... Has a photo of just about every gem in existence, at least as of the date of the last publishing. Think it''s about $ 60.00

Check Amazon for used ones.
