So this is my first post so be gentle. Just found you all and looks like a wealth of info. I have been researching rings for about a year for my special lady and need to get this done soon :). I have an approx 0.88 round diamond that was from the ring of my mother that I plan on using to save on the diamond cost and sentimental value. My lady I feel would rather I save the money and spend it on a unique band/setting and honeymoon since I have the option. Its no flawless diamond but not bad. I have gotten out of her that she wants a unique setting, not solitude and she does not like the 3 diamond settings either. Something antique like with beads etc.. and some detailed work so each time she looks at it she see's a new detail. She has said she is not opposed to palladium but my options seems to be limited on that since there does not seem to be many palladium rings with lots of details.

So I have found a setting I like but of course it is a Hearts on Fire setting I found in a local high end jewelry chain store. So I feel like it is marked up a lot being that they are asking for $5400 for just the setting. The setting is a Platinum antique like setting that has about .65 ct in small HOF side stones which I guess is where the cost is. I believe it is this setting:

So my question is, what is the general thought on the Hearts On Fire settings? Everyone says how perfect the diamonds are etc.. etc.. some seem to say they are worth it others not, but are the settings worth it or are you paying 50% more for the name? They checked and my own diamond they agreed would work and look good in the ring. I feel like I am getting off cheap since I don't have to pay for the diamond so trying to make it up with a great band. But don't want to waste the money if there are other lines I should be looking at.

My main concern is I looked at about 4 different rings, and of course each time the price went up the sales person was like ohhh that one is so much better you should get that.. etc.. so I felt like she was just looking at the price. This is about the 5th jewlrey shop and they all seem to be the same... and I'm so clueless on this stuff so they probably smell the blood when i walk in :(.

Thanks for the opinions!

for antique looking/lots of detail have you considered Tacori settings?

Yes..that was one of the other options I had found online but never saw in store..however, I am looking on there website and there seems to be a few nice ones so maybe I'll swing by the local jeweler that carries them.. thanks for the the tip.

I have the HOF Significance engagement ring. It is beautifully made. I would highly recommend the quality of their settings. I would try to get the platinum, if its in your budget. If not the 18k wg with palladium alloy is lovely.

I forgot to mention/ask as well. My GF is a nurse who works 3 days a week in a ICU. So she basically has to have gloves on 36hrs a week. This complicates the ring choices. Also, to make matters worse she doesn't typically wear jewelry and has lost the last nice piece I bought her :(. So I'm thinking I will need to get a necklace as well for her to put the ring around her neck when she is at work or get a ring with low enough profile to go under gloves (Not sure how realistic this is).

Does it matter if I get a platinum ring that the necklace has to be platinum or something as well? Like would the silver of a silver necklace interact or something? Just asking, maybe I'm silly but I just don't know these things :).

Any thoughts on this as well I would appreciate! Thanks again!

Not sure about the ring on a necklace option. I know some people do it, but most have concurred that it's not the safest option. If she's a nurse, you may want to look at something sleeker or lower set. Sorry I can't be more help there. :)

I just saw that niceice has a closeout on some Tacori settings and wanted to post that in case you were interested:

not sure if this link is going to work...

ETA: hmm, I just noticed that most of these are for a 6.5mm stone, which is ~1ct. Depending on the diameter of your .88ct, it might be close enough.
