Hi all,

I''d appreciate everyone''s opinion on a quote that I received from a local dealer.

.66c, Hearts on Fire round, E colour, SI1, $US 4500 (includes platinum setting).

I''m in Canada so if I order from places like Whiteflash or SuperbCert, I''ll pay approx. 25% more due to taxes and levies.

OUCH! That's overly expensive!

BTW, if you really love it, be sure to post table, crown, pavilion, girdle and depth informations. These would help.

I did a little research, and this is what I found:

0.65 D/SI 1
Which, even sfter you have paid taxes, should be about $3450.

0.628 E/VS 2
About $3570.

0.64 F/VS 1
About $3875.

0.71 F/SI 2

Or look at this! Very pretty!
0.80 I/VS 2

These are all A Cut Above H&A diamonds available at Whiteflash

0.610 E SI1 AGS Ideal H&A $2,306.00 View
0.604 F VS2 AGS Ideal H&A $2,457.00 View
0.644 F VS2 AGS Ideal H&A $2,621.00 View

0.763 F VS2 AGS Ideal H&A $3,845.00 View
0.792 F VS2 AGS Ideal H&A $3,995.00 View

So, even if you have to pay a lot of taxes etc etc, they still seem to be considerably cheaper!

Also, I've heard of people who had their stones shipped to a FedEx station right between USA and Canada, they drove to the station and picked the stone in person. I know it's not correct, but this is what I read.

HOF are marked up about 40% over regular H&A unbranded stones. Minus out your 25% for taxes and levies and you are still overpaying about 15%. I would defintiely do a side by side comparison of what your $4500 gets you if you shop at different vendors (including the local dealer). You may find that you can get a .10c bigger stone or a better color and clarity grade or similar for the same price as the HOF even after all the taxes and levies. Is that worth it? I'm not sure what your priorities are...Hearts on Fire diamonds are very very beautiful...but shop smart.

Before you purchase, do the research, the calculations and be 100% sure your purchase is what you feel confident with.

Best of luck!!

Would love to know what you decide.

magoomba,

In my opinion, HoFs are way overpriced. If you have concerns about paying taxes and other levies if you don't buy through the local dealer then try buying from a local dealer that will provide you exceptional quality stones without the excessive premium demanded by HoF dealers.

SuperbCert diamonds, IMO, are just as nice as HoF diamonds. USACerted is located in Canada and sells SuperbCert diamonds. So if you were to purchase a SuperbCert diamond through USACerted, you'll avoid all those taxes and levies that you were worry about paying.

And as Mara posted, even with all the taxes of levies that you would pay for importing a diamond, it can still be a better bargain than the HoF. So don't be so fast in ruling out buying on-line.

The price I was quoted includes a platinum setting.
So it's hard for me to determine if the markup is on the stone or the setting.

Is there a recommended dealer online for Eightstars?

what exactly type of setting? solitaire basic? that is all of a few hundred dollars. So that has nothing to do with the markup for the most part. You can run a few searches online to find this information out for yourself. The bottom line is that you are going to pay more most likely for this HOF stone. If that is what you want, then do it. Otherwise, do the research and find something else. It's pretty simple.

Technically there are no on-line dealer for 8* diamonds. You would need to contact the 8* company to find an 8* dealer for your area. If no dealer for your particular area, the 8* company would arrange to sell direct to you (at least this use to be the practice).

Please note that 8* diamonds are comparative in price to HoF so don't be shocked by the price quotes when you inquire. Whether 8* or HoF are worth the markup as compared to other super ideals, only you can determine that.

Just got some more information from the dealer.
weight .667 ct
table 56%
depth 61.3%
pavilion 40.9 degrees
crown 34.5 degrees

not sure about the cutlet
The cut advisor shows top performance of 1.5%

The diamond sounds fine, don't really think that was an issue, as HOF diamonds are cut exceptionally well. But you are probably still overpaying.

Again it goes back to what you feel comfortable with, but I would research EVERY option first before plunking down the cash. If you have exhausted all options, and still feel as though this HOF is the one...then get it and feel confident in your purchase.

No, it's not true that you avoid the taxes and levies if you were to purchase it through USACerted. I believe USACerted obtains all their diamonds from the United States. Any time you import diamonds to Canada, you'll be paying the taxes.
