I keep reading the posts about rounds with perfect H&A and wonder if I could get a Heart Shaped diamond that will sparkle as much as a round brilliant? will this ever be possible? I say this because my FF wants a diamond that "sparkles in the dark" but she loves the heart shape diamond. I am getting a feeling of being way way over my head when looking at heart shape diamonds, just writing this post gets my heart pumping faster.

The hearts are soo romantic and you can still get great great sparkle. Essentially the heart shape is a pear-shaped diamond with a cleft at the top. They are all facetted similar to the round cut diamond and give off beautiful brilliance as well. There are also different proportions when looking at heart shapes. Some are fat and some are slender. The best part is that because it is considered a fancy shape you don't pay nearly as much as you pay for the rounds.

Why do you feel like you're way over your head?!?

Fun tool...select the heart at the top. You can play around with the numbers to see what it does with the heart shape.

What size stone would you be looking for? Color?

Edit...doh...forget to give the link :twirl: ...

well, my feeling comes from never buying anything with out researching it to the stars and back. Im just worried that it might be to shallow or it wont have the fire and brilliance that a H&A round would have. I just want to get a heart shaped diamond that has Extreme sparkle, brilliance, and fire.

I am open to all suggestions i like something in the G,H, I range with Eye clean or better. 1 carat or less.

all suggestions meaning: what color will get me the most sparkle?

I fixed my post above (becasue I can be a dummy at times). Anyway, color has nothing to do with sparkle. Cut has
the most affect on sparkle so you are right to worry about it being too shallow or too deep. Best if you work with a
vendor that provide aset/idealscope images to check out the light return.

These vendors provide aset/idealscope imags: Whiteflash, James Allen, GOG, Brian Gavin.

Its not easy to find nice hearts. IMO because of the cut they wont sparkle like a RB but you can probably find one
that sparkles pretty nicely with some hunting. I have a pear engagement ring as well as a round pendant so I
am speaking from my own experience. If your GF values sparkle over shape then it would be best to stick with
a round. If having a heart shape stone with sparkle being her second criteria then...heart it is.

Here is a tool that will "grade" a heart shape stone for you. If you look down a little ways you will see a chart that has
numbers that you might try to stay in like depth...59-63%. However, numbers alone wont work for a fancy cut. You
really need aset/idealscope images and pictures. GOG also does videos for their customers which would also be of
help.

I'm dont think too many vendors keep hearts in stock. It would probably be best to pick one or two to work with and tell them
what you are looking for.

You can find a nice heart shaped diamond that will sparkle a lot. I have a 1/2 ct. RHR heart diamond and really like it. Some of the dealers that are popular one PS are quite helpful and will help you find what you are looking for in a diamond. I can't wait to see what you get.

What a coincidence.
Today I just got a heart shaped diamond, and I can't believe how sparkly it is. (And I'm a hopeless cut snob).

Per GIA it's a natural fancy vivid yellow-orange diamond, VVS2.
Depth 70.6%
Table 65%

Here it is with its sister FCDs.
I learned to today that hearts can be surprisingly sparkly.

HI Dskuzma
This is a great question.
If we use the barometers generally used here on PS, no, a heart will not have the same sparkle as the best cut round
However, I find that's more of a reason to question the barometers....
If what she wants is a heart, then you can find a beauty.

Find a vendor you are comfortable with and let them show you what they feel is a really well cut heart- and don't handcuff them by using a chart.A chart using categories like 1A, 2A, etc, totally misses the mark, and may actually prevent you from getting a really well cut stone. A stone like Kenny's new beauty would be downgraded using the cut grade chart- needlessly
These things have to be evaluated with the human eye.
For example, some hearts are "squished" and others may be too tall- the general outline can't be categorized as each of us will find our own benchmark based on the visuals.
If you choose an internet vendor, I feel the most valuable things will be good photos and videos.

THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH. These are some AWESOME suggestions. After reading your comments I have a lot more confidence Im going to ask for a lot of video and pictures from many vendors. Before I read the comments here I was very hopeless and losing sleep, now im much more at ease and will be engaging in a full on HUNT until I find my prize!! Thanks to everyone here at PS you Gals and Guys are GREAT!!!

I have a heart shaped diamond that's just at 1 C. When I first purchased it all I cared about was size & clarity. I purchased it from a retail jewelery store - which I will never do again! It shined like crazy when I bought it but after wearing it for a few days it started to get dull looking & I thought it was just bc it was dirty. Regardless of how often it's cleaned it doesn't matter...it still looks dull in a matter of days. I have had that issue with this stone in particular. I have a 1/2 C antique cut stone that has so much more liveliness! It is such a bummer :( I never take either off and they have not been cleaned in a looongg time & the round always outshines my heart many times over.

I am not saying you won't find a shiny & beautiful heart shaped diamond with lots of brilliance just make sure the cut is "top of the line" IMO. When I purchased this heart I never knew about ASET images or Ideal Scope so that will be key for you IMO. I also notice my heart gets dirty in in the same place under the "belly" I will call it - basically in the center of the diamond but the out edge look a lot more shiny. I am not sure if that is common in heart shapes - to get buildup under the stone more so then on the sides but I always assumed that was an issue because of the shape itself.

Good luck with your diamond search & I would def. work with a vendor that has a return policy!
