HCA - Is there an APP for that?

I would LOVE to have an HCA app right on my iPhone. I know I can just access the PS site, but an app would be really convenient.

It would be a great way to test what is pleasing to my eye vs. HCA score vs. GIA/AGS cut grades.

Garry, have you got one?

I can't speak for Garry but perhaps the key questin is whether you (and others) would be willing to pay for such an app. Development costs are not inconsequential after all.

Hey starry, the HCA link from pricescope works on Safari (guilty, was doing it in the jewelry store with hubby's iPhone). Not as cool as an app, but it works in a pinch. Did NOT work on a blackberry so well.

Aren't the costs usually covered by the fee we pay for such apps? That would require determining how many might purchase it and pricing accordingly... but that's business in general isn't it. I love the idea and would definitely buy it :appl:

how much for?
And estimate the # of sales?

I have an Android phone (Evo) and I was just thinking this the other day! If reasonably priced, I would definitely buy it.

I would download one, but not for more than a few $$ as it is easily accessible on your iphone by making the HCA page on pricescope it's own home page on the screen, but i guess it would be handy to have when there was no internet connection.

I would have no way of estimating the volume of sales as I understand that it is not that well known out of PS, and you would have a better idea about how many people know about PS than me, ::) but I wouldn't have thought that it would have cost a huge amount to create the app as you already have the actual tool, it would just be a matter of applying it to an apple application system? I have heard of primary school children creating their own apps so it can't be too hard! :))

I just searched 'diamond' in the app store and there is only a small handful of apps related to actual diamonds. One looks at the estimated retail diamond prices for consumers that looks kind of interesting, but i am not willing to waste my $1.19 to see if it is a load of you know what 8)

Garry, there could be something in this.. if not for the HCA, maybe a 'pocket sized' reference version of PS for people to refer to when in stores? If so, i want the naming rights! :cheeky: :))

Hi Denver. :wavey: A lot of apps are free, but I would be willing to pay for this. Could save the user from a lot of scrolling and loading time that occurs with using the web page. Garry would have to determine pricing according to projected downloads I would guess.

Hi Anne. :wavey: Thanks. Yes, I use the Safari browser too and my experience is that PS is Safari-compatible. I know not all web sites are. Sounds like great minds think alike!

Hi Garry. :wavey: I did a quick search on Google under "create iPhone app" and there is a ton of info out there.

"How to Build an iPhone App in 6 Easy Steps" is about a 12-year-old girl who built an app that uses the iPhone camera to measure her height. It references Mockapp.com, which apparently helps you lay out your app page. It also references Apple's Developer Guidelines if you want to do it yourself.

"How to Build an iPhone App Without Hiring a Developer" gives 10 online services for developing an app. They seem to vary in cost.

(I've had links to articles removed in the past, so I'm guessing I'm not allowed to post such links.)

Like HOT said, seems easy! Heck, I wonder if the iPhone could handle Idealscope and ASET apps! How handy would that be!! :appl:

LOL starryeyed! I was going to suggest an app that takes an idealscope image through the iphones camera but i thought that may have been a bit much! :cheeky: but maybe not?

I hope Garry creates one! I'm not sure about IS thru the phone's camera HOT - I have a hard time getting a crisp close-up image, but maybe that's just me. I'm thinking something software driven until camera phones have a macro function. Who knows, maybe that's coming next month? :naughty:

I just took this pic in like 5 seconds with my Nokia E71 of a CZ lting on my desk. I have not taken more than 30 pic's with the phone ever in +1 year. Did not touch the settings.

Cool! You're going to call it the starryeyedHOT ap, right? :cheeky:

I still have not had a compelling request.
$1.19 is a waste of time and effort

How about $1.99 x the # of PS viewers from now until the end of apps?

You could have a button right on the PS homepage - get the Holloway Cut Advisor App HERE.

It's not necessarily a huge money-maker (who knows), but it gives you first mover advantage. I don't see where AGS or GIA have anything like it.

Maybe you could get HOT to develop it for you, for special mention? :naughty:

Are there any app developers reading this that would like to help?

This would be a fantastic business idea. I'd be happy to help. What phone OS's do you think you'd want to focus on? Android and iOS?

Oh yeah, I'm a developer =)

Go for IOS Indy!!!! Iphone, Ipod, I pad..... Wow!
