Tomorrow 3/17 St Patty''s Day I am having my inherited oec/omc stone appraised by The Jewelry Judge in Garden City, Long Island NY.

I know that I get to sit there & watch while the appraisal is being done and that I get to leave with all of the appraisal paperwork, but are there any specific questions I should be asking? Are there questions any of you wished you had asked your appraiser? I plan on having the stone set in the Vatche X-prong- is there anything the setter (probably GOG) will need to know from the appraiser that might not be included in the written appraisal?

I''m a little nervous doing this but my curiosity got the best of me, thanks pricescope

....since I probably can''t insure the loose stone will I have to go through the appraisal process all over again once it''s set??

thanks for any insight anyone can give me- I''ll post specs tomorrow and we''ll see if I''m crying in my green beer....

p.s. anyone interested in photos of the stone can search wabi-sabi for my previous posts.....

I am sure there are many other things, but one thing you may want to ask is if the girdle is very thin in any areas so that you can alert the jeweler about them, and so that your diamond is set to protect them.

Why go to the appraiser before the stone is set ? GOG will surely provide a ton of specs for your curiosity and if the stone will not be insured loose... what''s the point ?

valeria-

I guess I jumped the gun in deciding to have it appraised now- I really thought that I would be able to insure it loose and pricescope does have a way of getting to me by wanting to know NOW what the specs are

! I also had it in my head that a loose appraisal was the most accurate way to go (and I am considering having it reset in its old 14k yg setting for insurance purposes.)

one good thing about doing it now with this independent appraiser is that if anything ugly or structurely unsound were to be recognized I would have time to prepare myself..if I was taking it to GOG to be set and then was told "sorry, not with this stone" I would have a nervous breakdown right then & there!

and although I don''t want to think about this possibility, it could be much longer than I thought before this sucker gets set. I guess I just thought that knowing the specs & getting it appraised would feel like the process was moving forward rather than standing still......

Yeah... I can surely understand this. Any chance have it set fast ? Perhaps the appraiser could recommend a jeweler with just the righ setting in stock
