My husband is taking me out to a fancy dinner tonight, so I decided to get a blowout. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, so I decided to go to the Hair Cuttery right next door to my house. Since there was no cutting involved, I thought, how much can you mess up a simple blowout? I have long (2 inches above my bra strap) slightly wavy hair that I like blown out straight. When it's done right, it's like Jennifer Aniston's hairdo.

Anyway, they just gave me the next lady who was available. After she washed my hair, she was having difficulty getting it sectioned. Then she dropped & spilled her water bottle on the floor TWICE right next to where she had my set my purse on the ground. When I moved my purse, she shot me a look.

Then, after a couple of minutes of drying my hair, not even pulling the round brush all the way through, she said she was done. I said, no, there's still some wave in it, and it was straggly at the bottom (not curved under) and flat on the top - no body or bounce. She acted annoyed, and then curled the ends under a little, but didn't even do all my hair, or do anything to add body at the scalp. It looked like I had done it myself, only probably not as good

When she said that she was done again, I asked her if she was familiar with the round barrel brush technique (that I've gotten from every stylist I've veer been to except her). She stormed away & sent another sylist over. Within 5 minutes, the new stylist did a great job, and my hair looked really nice. I gave her a fat tip.

When I got up front to pay, they charged be $26 for a blowout - AT HAIR CUTTERY!!! My husband always goes there, and gets a shampoo, cut & dry for $16. When I asked about the price discrepancy, They said that women's hair is more expensive, and they charge a $10 fee for any "long" hair, which means below the shoulders. I could have gone to a real salon & gotten a blowout at that price!

Anyway, to show that I'm not cheap or bitter, I still tipped the original stylist $3, because I'm a bigger person than she is. However, I did ask to speak to the manager, to ask if she was new, and to let him know that she didn't seem to know the first thing about giving a blowout. He told me that she had been doing hair for years (doubt that) but that she was new to that location. He didn't offer to give me any discount or anything for my trouble.

Anyway, just wanted to warn all you gals away from Hair Cuttery.

Also wanted to see if any of you have ever had a similar experience, where you had to ask for someone else to do your hair because the stylist was doing such a crappy job ...

Sigh . . . DD got a hair cut as a walk in at a similar chain [don''t remember which one]. Long hair, slightly layered. She came out looking like her hair had been cut with pruning shears. I hit the ceiling with the manager. Probably was not charged - don''t remember. I wound up taking her to my expensive salon who did a great job and fully repaired the damage. She has gone there ever since.

Walk in chain salons - stay away - far, far away . . .

And, $26 for a wash and blow dry at the Hair Cuttery? Are you kidding me? [BTW, I know the owner of the chain - he knows how to make a buck] My stylist charges me $25 for my long hair and she throws a bang trim in for free [at my spa salon place where everything is an arm and a leg].

I also forgot to mention that she burned my scalp twice with the hair dryer

You know I have seen a lot of bad reviews of Hair Cuttery online-I don't even think we have one in Vegas but when I search salon reviews up pops that place in other cities.

I have found a lot of stylists don't know how to do blowouts. Usually if they are Sassoon, Paul Mitchell etc. trained they do a great job if they went to a regular ol' beauty school &/or don't care about continuing education

I have the screwed by hairstylist story to end all stories.

I have EXTREMELY thick hair, and I always have problems finding new stylists who can cut my hair without making it look like a hack job. Well, the same girl from J.C. Penney had done my hair since college. I would literally drive home to my parents house to get my haircut by her b/c everyone else I tried would butcher it and I''d have to go to her anyway to get it fixed.

Well, she gave me a trim and highlights the Wed. before my Sat. wedding and we confirmed the time she would do my hair on my wedding day. Now she had just started a nursing job at the hospital, but she had been doing my hair for seven years, and was coming in that day to do my hair especially......

.....except that she never showed up that Saturday. She didn''t even call to say she had been hung up at the hospital and someone else needed to do my hair. She sent me a text that night.

Needless to say, I was devastated. I was in tears. The girl who did my bridesmaids'' hair finally did mine, and she did a good job (I gave her a $100 tip, and told her to tell A. she had gotten her tip), but we were late the entire day as a result. The priest even yelled at us and cut a few prayers from the wedding mass b/c we got to the church late.

I just tried the second stylist I''ve been to since then, and he was beyond horrified for his whole profession. He was like, ''Shut up! Honey, I would seriously find out when she''s working and go up to her while she has a client in her chair and say ''Thank you for almost ruining the most important hair day of my life.'''' I''m thinking about it.

No.

I shave my head in the shower.

Can''t complain to the mirror.

I had the worst cut EVER at JCPenney. I walked in with shoulder length wavy hair (it''s curly but I was straightening it to just wavy). I told the girl what I wanted which was a few layers around the face and not much length taken off. She turned me around so I wasn''t facing a mirror and the next thing I know she''s taking clippers to my head!!! My hair was about an inch long in the back and I had to let another girl try to "fix" it and ended up with a pixie! The manager was horrified and offered me a free cut. I replied that she''d have to hold on to that for about a year before my hair would need cut.

I''ve never had to ask someone else to do my hair, but have, on numerous occasions, had to go back and have another stylist FIX the crappy job the previous hair dresser had done.

What exactly is "Hair Cuttery?" There isn''t that chain around here. Is it like Supercuts?

Walk in chain salons - stay away - far, far away . . .
I admit, my kids do get their hair cuts in those types of walk-in-chain establishments. One time, I took my son to a Supercuts and after his hair was finished, he walks over and one sideburn was about 1/2" longer than the other! I mean SUPER obvious. I told the gal who cut his hair that they were uneven. How does she reply? She *laughs*!!! Before she corrected his hair, the owner called her back into the office.

I have a friend who is a stylist that keeps telling me I should let her do my hair. It''s pure torture, because as much as I love her as my friend, I would not want her to be my stylist because she''s just not that skilled. Everytime she mentions it, I just try to laugh it off or change the subject because if I tell her that I have another hair person she gets upset and says something like "what, my hair cutting isn''t good enough for you?" But really, I don''t want to go. For one thing, I don''t believe in mixing friendship with business. It doesn''t help that I''m ridiculously picky about who does my hair (read: I''ve been going to the same stylist for the past decade. She''s at my mom''s salon, and on occasion I''ve waited more than six months just to go to her.) So when she asked if I would sit in as a hair model for her job application, my husband was incredulous that I said yes. I figured I could get it fixed later if she really screwed up. *sigh* It took her almost two hours to wash, unevenly cut, and blow dry my hair that day. Not even a blow out, a blow DRY. I wanted to cry.

Vespergirl, sorry to hear about your experience. Apparently people can suck after years in the industry, my friend included. Just consider yourself lucky you don''t get nagged to get your hair done by them all the time...

I''m sorry about experience. What a nuisance.

I have complained about my stylist before. I go to a very expensive hair salon that specializes in curly hair. They normally do an outstanding job, which is why it is worth the money. Once I went last-minute and got a stylist who didn''t greet me, didn''t say a word, when I asked him for ideas, he said he wouldn''t give me any because if afterwards I didn''t like it, "you''re gonna sit here crying and it''s gonna be my fault" (
23.gif
ummm, I don''t cry or make scenes because of a bad hair day, hello sexism), AND he did not do a good job that was worth the money. At all.

Afterwards, I thought I should have asked to switch stylists, and in the future I will definitely do that. Instead, I did complain to the manager at the end and left a minimum tip only.

Well, I''m glad to see that it isn''t just me ...

MC, Hair Cuttery is like SuperCuts.

DH had a bad experience at a Hair Cuttery. He has always gone to ''his'' barber shop, a few miles away. I think we had a wedding to go to, and we were short on time, so he went to the Hair Cuttery, a few blocks away. Big mistake. The hair on the back of his neck was all crooked, and the lady had nicked his neck pretty bad, and it ended up turning into this ugly pimple thing... he was freaking out (he never gets pimples, lucky duck). He was afraid he got someone elses germs into his skin, which is pretty plausible, if the people don''t wash their cutters... it did clear up, but he (or I) will never go their again, or any other chain hair place.

I am thankful that one of my best friends is a hair stylist- I go to her salon and she makes sure she does everything prefectly (and gives me a big, fat discount!)

I''d been going to the same stylist for about 4 years. She used to just rock my hair. The past few times she did it, it was like she didn''t care anymore. She recently graduated from nursing school, so I think her heart just isn''t into doing hair anymore. The last color job she did was so awful, I had to go to someone completely new to fix it.

I haven''t told her why I haven''t rebooked with her in months. I''m kind of dreading that moment.

Lucky you!

My hair horror story -

I had been seeing my "original" stylist since 2005. She was awesome and always did a great job on my hair. For my son''s baptism in September 2008 I waited a bit too long to get my hair trimmed and agreed to let DH''s aunt cut my hair about a week before the big event. This woman managed the Dillard''s salon for many years, and also cut hair there for a long time so I trusted her. Well, I was wrong wrong wrong. She slaughtered my hair. Cut the sides straight up with no layers and nearly shaved the back up - like a guy''s hair cut. I sulked out of her house, when home and washed it, crying the entire time. I went to my "original" stylist after the baptism for her advice, and she blended it in a bit and told me to see her again in about 10 - 12 weeks when it had a chance to grow out some. Unfortunately, my original stylist was diagnosed with cancer and died about six weeks later

I have since been able to find a new stylist near my home that does a great job on my fine hair. I''m still growing it out nearly a year after the slaughtering incident and my new gal does has helped the coping so much.

I used to go to this great stylist, I was extremely happy with her but unfortunately, her studio was so far away from where I live. Then I found this salon 15 minutes away from my home and decided to give it a try. I've been dyeing my hair blond for as long as I can remember and it grows really fast so I have to take care of the roots pretty often. I thought it would be so much easier if I didn't have to travel that long every couple of weeks or so. So I went to that new salon and less than an hour later I walked out with bluish and purplish tints to my hair!!! I don't know what happened, don't know what she did, but my hair had blue and purple in it!

Needless to say, I was completely stricken and beyond mad. I went back to my original stylist and let her take care of the mess. She thought it was hilarious, by the way.

I had a horror experience once.

Right before a weekend cruise to nowhere (btw, i hate cruising but that''s another story), i made an appointment with the senior stylist at a nearby salon. Normally, i go to a friend of mine but as there wasn''t enough time, and I didn''t make the effort to get there earlier in the week, i figured how bad could someone new be as I didn''t want anything difficult.

I have thick, wavy, very long hair. All i wanted was to have it a bit angled in the front with sideswept bangs. that''s it!! I walked out of there with in Farrah Fawcett 70''s hairdo. Fliprs and all. I would have complained but the "senior (my arse) stylist" was also the owner. I was out 180 bucks not including tipping the girl who blew it out because he was too tired from his late evening at some art gallery opening
20.gif

Wiith less than three hours before my cruise, i was screwed! Wore my hair in a ponytail for months, but even that didn''t work l as the short pieces kept getting loose. It was horrible experience.

Thankfully I don''t have any experiences as bad as some of those mentioned here -
I feel terrible for some of you ladies.!

I did go to a new salon a couple weeks ago upon recommendation from my beautician (her hair looks really nicely done).
When I got there, instead of the owner I had booked with, I was seated with a young girl who looked no more than 16 (turned out she was 17, and just out of her apprenticeship).
I *always* take plenty of photos from magazines of both the cut and colour that I want - it''s just easier than explaining.
So I showed her my colour photos, she got out the swatch book and started showing me swatch after swatch after swatch of all different colours, asking which ones I wanted. I mean, like 10 or more...
I started to get confused and really uncomfortable that she had no idea what she was doing.
She was asking me to choose the colours, without any guidance, and I felt like saying "isn''t that your job to tell me what will work?!" (btw, it wasn''t difficult at all what I wanted - just a dark chestnut brown with a few caramel highlights)
20.gif

She seemed liked she was really struggling to match the colour swatches to the photos, and couldn''t make a decision - it was so awkward!

After about 10mins of this, I ended up just turning to the owner and saying "look, I''m feeling a bit uncomfortable here as I was referred to see yourself, and usually I just show the colourist the photos and they tell me what the correct colour choices are for my hair".
Luckily, they both took it quite well, and the owner ended up doing my hair.

I still didn''t end up with the colour I wanted (I got a very dark brown with reddish highlights), but it''s live-able.
I''m just glad I wasn''t there for a cut

Thank you for this wonderfully timed thread! I have a big event coming up, and I''m moving to a different state TOMORROW, so yesterday I drove 200 miles (400 round trip!) to go to my normal salon. This helps me feel better about all that driving - worth it! My husband thinks I am insane. However, the few times I have tried to go elsewhere I wind up severely disappointed.

A couple years ago, I went to the local salon and saw that guy that ALL my friends go to. I asked for highlights and lowlights with a result that wasn''t too light (I''m a darker blonde and prefer the NOT bleached out look) and ended up with a whole head of moussy brown.
38.gif
For over $100! It looked very drab, I hated it. Two weeks later I was in my normal salon begging them to fix it!

Yep... He made me cry cos my hair was horrible... and it was entirely his fault!
