Have to ask you guys Asscher vs OEC

Anyone have experience with Asschers and OECs? Does an OEC have more fire, brilliance, dispersion than a step cut? Thanks

Yes, I have both. They are just two totally different stones with different personalities. I'd want a very well cut stone of either type. I guess if I could only have one, I'd probably stick with the AVR (OEC) just because I have always had a round e-ring diamond, but I am in love with asschers and am very fortunate to be able to have both. I have been married a very long time, though, so these rings were many years later! That's the best way to solve the dilemma, though!

My only real complaint with my asscher is that it gets dirty easy and looks very dull when it is. Maybe the OEC will be the same, but I'm thinking that the problem is worse with step cuts?

Every OEC is different, so it is good to try to see as many as possible to learn your preferences and to begin to recognize well cut ones.

As far as settings go, the Beverley K line is worth looking at.

I'd probably just go with a simple solitaire until I knew what I loved most and just save for that.

I think it is true of step cuts and all large faceted stones, to an extent. I think the small facets of a well cut modern round hide dirtiness more. So I still find myself cleaning my AVR/OEC really often!

DS, is there a reason you went with an I AVR rather than J, K, L etc. Had you seen AVRs of other shades while deciding?

I think the general consensus here feels that asschers are one type of stone that can seem smaller than its carat weight due to cut. That could be a consideration when comparing the two.

You got it sparkle. I have a 2 ct asscher but I am seeing I can get better finger coverage with an OEC. I LOVE my asscher. That would be a HARD decision to part with it but I also love what I have seen of OECs. I can't afford a 3+ ct asscher since they are so bottom heavy the cost skyrockets 3 ct+ but doesn't add much spread. GRR

Ah. Gotcha. Go for the OEC. It will be massive and amazing.

It's true!! I LOVE it....but drats to the finger coverage! Of course it was shining so marvelously yesterday and over performing like it knew I was thinking of contemplating OECs. Made me think I can't part with it, lol

Asschers are better in halos unless they are pretty large. That enhances the size appearance and also serves as a frame for the stone which I think it so attractive. I am having an antique asscher set now without a halo because I was afraid it would be too large for daily wear, but I also hope I don't regret not putting it in a halo!

I did see multiple AVRs to get an idea of size and color. I color was the lowest I could go for my e-ring but had I seen a truly high J, maybe I would have considered it (my antique asscher is K, so I am open to color, but I wanted my primary e-ring to present as white). It took me months to figure it out because at the outset, I thought he didn't have what I wanted so I kept ordering stones until my preferences actually adapted to what he had!!! For one thing, size and budget increased, but I guess that would have been inevitable and I would have ended up upgrading later had I settled too soon!

If you want to waste some time, I had threads on the stones I looked at and agonized over. I guess just skim for the pictures and you'll get some ideas about color. It took me 9 months, primarily he wasn't getting in new stock very often and at the outset, the final two stones were initially out of my size and price range. In looking at these threads now, I realize how fortunate I was to have so many PS friends helping me!
