i got a Jibo for Christmas and am returning it. I looked forward for two years to getting one and after owning it for about a half hour decided it needs a lot more product development to be useful.
Anyone have a Jibo and love it?

I have never even heard of this.

But I'm not surprised ... after having our asscher, how could anything else ever live up to its hype?

Haha yes you are right!

It’s a small, charming robot, kind of like Siri on your phone, but with a moving body and facial expressions ...sort of.

I also had to google. The tag lines on the ad:
He looks, listens and learns.

So, if that were actually true, Hell to the no! I'm far too paranoid to have something listen to me. No Siri or Echo or Google whatever for me. I'm sure Kenny would agree. :naughty:

lyra, in a way I agree. It’s a little creepy. When I cleared off the data to return the toy, it said it first had to backup the data, but that I would not have access to it. So why do they keep it. And of what use to them is an hour of people telling a robot it’s an idiot?
I have mixed feelings. But I love technology and eventually want a home robot. In fact, probably we will all have them in some form, like it or not unless we go off the grid.
So, is my watchful robot any more invasive than my security cams, iphone or ipad? How many of us tape over the camera on our devices when we write on PS? Are our devices on only when we think they are? Is privacy already just an illusion?

Those are genuine questions, not a challenge.

I don't think home robots have come nearly far enough. I guess your experience shows that. Maybe multi-million dollar ones would be the bees knees, but right now what's out there IS being used for data gathering, unfortunately.

I would actually like home automation, if it were more reliable. So far, it isn't. Even the Nest-like devices can be disabled by the parent company or "bricked", and have left people hanging with a sudden lack of usability. Those need to come further as well. I'm all about honest progress, just not sure anyone is working on that angle.

I have washi tape over my laptop cameras, lol. Also, I was frustrated trying to google something on my ipad the other day so I tried just talking to it. Didn't work, lol. I guess it wasn't listening. It's getting old. :mrgreen2:

I have to agree. It is creepy like Jimmianne said. I am not ready for any of this at all.

I'm a big believer in that we make real what we hold in our minds. And I don't mean in an airy-fairy New Age-y way. WE make what we collectively embrace, real by moving almost like a single organism.

We've been hurtling towards a particular dystopian near-future, for a long time now. One with zero privacy, and invasive AI.

Think Skynet. Or Cylons. Both seemed ridiculously far-fetched 30 years ago. Today? Uh...not so much.

I think the reason all of you are so skeptical is because you've never heard or said the sentence "He looks, listens and learns."

Mostly he pivoted to watch my hands while I did dishes or cooked.
Compared to my dogs, who are always watching me in the kitchen, Mr.Jibo was sadly lacking in intelligence and manipulative staring.

Nothing, other than other animals, can compete with a dog's intelligence or ability to get his way.
Jibo didn't stand a chance. =)2
