I have a Radiant stone from a diamond broker my Aunt knows being sent out to me. I also have 2 Radiants on held with another vendor. Should I have the best of the two with the other vendor sent out as well, and then take the two stones to the appraiser? That way I can have both appraised and compared and then make a decision and send the other one back?

Or is it better to take care of one at a time...have the first one appraised and only go with the 2nd one if the 1st doesn''t appraise well? Please advise!!
Thanks!

This goes on for a bit, but you may find parts of it helpful.

have them all shipped directly to the appraiser who knows more than you do and use his / her advice

Because of time savings, we charge less for second or third diamonds appraised during a single appointment or within one shipment. Many times we are asked to make comparisons that are best done with all the stones being inspected at the same time. If an expert opinion is sufficient, we occasionally can eliminate one or more without doing much but looking and discussing your priorities.

I''d suggest using expert advice.

Ben,

I would definitely have them all sent to the appraiser at the same time. You may end up paying more money for more than one appointment with the appraiser. Also, it will be easier for you to make a decision when allowing the appraiser to compare and contrast the over all quality of each diamond when viewing them side-by-side. So I say if your going to view the diamonds than you might as well view them at the same time.

This is what I want to do, however, my Mom has been somewhat involved (as mom''s tend to be) and is very skeptical and is worried about the appraiser swapping the diamonds and giving me a crap stone. I told her that you can verify by looking at where the inclusions are to make sure it''s the right stone. My aunt who is involved in the process is just as skeptical and said she would never send her stone to an appraiser she didn''t know. My aunt is attempting to hook me up with a deal from a NY diamond wholesaler whom she is friends with. The appraiser I would go to is Thom Underwood in San Diego.

Also, if I had one stone from two different sellers sent there...how does the process work? Does the appraiser hold them until I make payment? Is there any reason a seller would not send it to an appraiser?

The two stones that I want to compare are a 1.5 Radiant J VS1 and a 1.24 Radiant H SI1. Both are in the same price range and both are said to be "great cuts". I don''t have all of the specs on the 1.5 as of yet so I won''t post the rest of the specs yet.

Any help is appreciated!!
Thanks!

Thom Underwood in San Diego is a well know and honest appraiser. He is not going to do anything unethical like swap stones. He is in the business of serving his customer which is you.

If you mom is paying for the diamond, do what she says. If she is not, use your head. I and many professionals here have seen too many "I have a friend in the business" deals go bad.

Let Thom help you through this. That is what he does.

yep....i never believe in the "friend of a uncle" in the diamond business or a "wholesaler friend" in the diamond business.

The appraiser will typically not release the stone or stones to you until you have made payment and the vendor gives him/her the go ahead. You''ll have to manage the timing if it is 2 different vendors, but that shouldn''t be too hard if you get the appt ahead of time. Don''t get a Monday appt. Many vendors will not ship over a weekend for insurance purposes, so they would send it out on Monday, meaning you could have a Wed appt easily, and they could send back whatever needs to go back after that. Work with Thom to sort out the details of how it would work best for him.
