Has your finger size changed? Eternity rings - yes/no?

I am in the process of trying to decide on a wedding band (may have to start another post to ask your opinions on which style goes best with my e-ring :loopy: ). I really like the idea of the eternity ring, as I think it will drive me nuts if the ring spins and I have to keep adjusting it. And I am not too worried about banging up the diamonds, as I am pretty careful with them - I only wear my rings to work (where I sit on a computer most of the day) and when I go out (dinner, shopping, etc). As soon as I get home, the rings come off, I don't like having them on during housework, outside work, etc. Besides, I am leaning towards going with a channel setting, and it seems like these diamonds are a little safer than in other styles, such as a pave eternity band. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

However, my main concern is the sizing issue. So I'm also considering going with a 3/4 eternity, or the style where there is just a small bar of metal. I've read some posts that say eternity bands can not be sized at all, and some that say they can be sized a tad. I will add that I don't think my finger size will change much since its been a size 4 since high school (and I'll be 28 this month). And my mother said her ring size has not changed in 35 years of marraige and after having 2 kids and I am physically very similar to her (same goes for my grandmother, who had 5 kids). Buuuttt of course I can not predict the future and there is always a chance that it could change obviously. And even if I do decide to upgrade one day, I don't think I will ever get rid of my original set (I'm very sentimental) so I will want to continue to wear the original band.

So my question is, has your finger size changed throughout the years? And, will some jewelers size eternity bands or is it completely impossible? What are your thoughts on eternity bands? For those of you who have them, please let me know if you're happy you went with the full eternity. And for those of you who chose to go with a 1/2, 3/4, etc, please also share your thoughts.

My finger size in high school was a 5.5, and during my pregnancy, I went up to a 6.5 and stayed there. I do have two full eternity rings, both in a size 7. Why so large? Because of the width of the stack, having a little more room does make it easier to take on and off, and I do wear my rings while sleeping, and am not worried about my fingers swelling too much.

I wear a 4.25 but I just ordered a new eternity band in 4.5. I wanted to give myself a littler room for when it is HOT, my fingers swell a little. I also wanted to be able to stack it.

As for sizing an eternity band I think it depends on the jeweler you talk to as well as the type of eternity band. Different types my be sized easier.

Also I have never had a problem with my full eternity band loosing a stone. I wear them for almost everything and am not really delicate with my hand. I have 5 kids so I am not easy on them.

Good Luck

I've been a size 5.5 for the last 11 years (didn't wear rings before that so maybe longer), including my entire pregnancy and after.

My e-ring is a 3.75 and my WB - a Memoire eternity band - is a size 4. The e-ring goes on last, so it holds the WB on.

When I'm skinny, the e-ring is ever-so-slightly loose and the WB spins around. When I was pregnant and just after, the WB fit a little snug, the e-ring hardly at all.

So you could get a 4.25 if you are concerned about your weight fluctuating. Your e-ring will hold the band in place, but you have room to expand.

My finger changes size by a whole size from summer to fall (haven't measured it in winter time yet, but could shrink even more), so you're really lucky to have fingers that don't swell into little chubb monsters in the summer!

In your case, I would go with the 4. A 3/4 eternity band can be sized up very slightly (all the diamonds and prongs get a tiny bit squished, which actually makes them more secure), but is hard to size down (because all the diamonds and prongs get stretched, which loosens everything).

It may depend on how long you look into the future. I have just after 12 years had my engagement and wedding ring sized up.They were fine after 2 pregnancies and my weight hasnt changed a great deal and the fleshy bit of my finger is the same but my finger joints have grown..... As I approach 40 I must be developing some osteoarthritis in my PIPs/finger joints so the bony bit has grown. The area on my finger that the rings sit on hasnt changed so once over the bony joint the rings are slightly loose. The same thing happened to my mother, she has quite prominent but not painful joints in her hands now, but in her wedding photos her hands were much more delicate. I wouldnt personally buy a significant ring that cant be sized at least a little bit.

Hmm... So it sounds like if I want the full eternity, I should go for it but maybe go at least a quarter size bigger... But then I'm concerned with stories like misssoph's, since you really don't know what the future holds so the 3/4 might be more appealing. I plan on contacting a few jewelers tomorrow to find out what my options are as far as sizing a channel-set band as a full eternity vs 3/4.

Thank goodness I have a 3/4. My ring size changed 1/2 size down between the engagement and wedding - and has stayed there for awhile. I also had unexpected surgery a few years ago and my fingers swelled for a year.... Because you never know what is going th happen, I prefer the more flexible 3/4. It doesn't spin much and never to the front. Good luck!

my ring size hasn't changed after 4 kiddos. I love the look of both eternity and 1/2 eternities and I have both. If I have wide bands I go for size 4.5 and thin bands 4.25 - I like all my rings to line up evenly visually (Not stick out the sides). Good luck with what you decide!

I went with a tad bigger for the eternity ring.. 1/4 bigger as my hands swell in the summer..

Star,

My ering size has fluctuated between 4 1/4 and almost 4 3/4, what with the weight loss/ gain/ loss/ gain again :(( , salt and/ or alcohol intake and the weather. Some of my eternity rings now no longer fit me!! :blackeye: . I'd advise getting a 3/4 eternity as opposed to a full eternity band, or if not then do it 1/4-1/2 size bigger than your current size. Even if it spins, it doesn't really matter, as all you see is diamonds! :twirl:

Thank you for your input ladies! So it sounds like if I'm that concerned about it, maybe I would rather be safe than sorry and not go with the full eternity... Hmm... Maybe I'll just do a small area with no diamonds, about 8mm or so of just white gold. They should still be able to size it if I go that route, right?

My ring size has increased from 5.75 to about 6 after having my kids even though I've only gained maybe 3 lbs total. My right hand though increased by half a size. I guess you just never know, it may or may not change, but I'd want to make sure that the rings were sizable.

I love my eternity, but I have only had it for a few months, so I can't say much to the size changes. And I have not had kids yet, so I am unsure what pregnancy will do to my hands.

However, I like the look and am glad I have it. But I fully accept that I may have to replace it some day. If I was not ok with that, I would have gone with a 3/4 eternity band.
