In the house we just bought I've got a "big room" that is a bit of an odd duck, and I have been struggling a bit with layout.

I keep seeing online ads for Modsy. You pay a fee, describe your planned use of the space, upload pictures and measurements of your room and get back a 3-D render with 2 suggestions for layout. You can then tweak it yourself in their editing program. They use real furniture & accessories that can be purchased if you like what you see (or just use it as a guide). The cost is much more manageable than hiring an interior designer, which is appealing since we've already put a large chunk of budget into renovating the kitchen.

Has anyone tried this, or know someone who has? Did you get good results?

I’d never even heard of it, but it sounds really cool!! Let us know how it goes if you end up using it!

I haven't heard of this particular site, but I did once wind up on some random blog where I had asked a question and the blogger offered to design a room for me, for a fee that I don't recall. I didn't do it because it occurred to me, that I might not like her suggestions!

If you are on Houzz, you can "Find Professionals" where you basically type out the type of work you are seeking to have done, and designers get back to you. When I did this recently, only one designer got back to me, because I was pretty clear I was looking for consultation only. And, the designer who got back to me is very very inexpensive. Surprisingly so, but I think I will also consult with him on other designs as well . . . I need a lot of help, lol!!

Just a suggestion . . . you might want to look into seeing if anyone gets back to you and what their hourly rate is. Just another option really, and so easy/non-committal to seek the information.

My girlfriend used Havenly for our apartment. We paid maybe $100 to get design inspirations for our living room.

The designer was extremely friendly and quite helpful. She provided a number of products (rugs, tables, sofas, chairs) side by side and asked us which caught our attention the most. And worked from there.

I believe they work on commission and they get a fee for anything you buy that they recommended. The only item we decided to purchase was the rug, but in general it gave us a decent sense of what type of style we wanted.

I think Havenly and Modsy are similar services! The Modsy option to work with a designer 1-on-1 is more expensive; $199 vs. $69 for the basic package. Less, if you can find a promo code online, which I did. For the basic option you get your room rendered & populated with furniture from a collection based on a style quiz you take, then once you get your 2 looks you can edit it on your own.

@mistawow did you already have furniture for the room that they worked with, or did your designer choose all new furniture for you? I'm in a situation where I'm looking to get mostly new pieces.

We recently moved into a new apartment, and tossed out our old ikea furniture. So, to answer your question, they choose all new furniture for us. It makes things a lot easier if the room is empty.

I never heard of Modsy, and only came across Havenly through an ad on the train (NYC). We worked 1-1 (virtually) with a designer.

Yeah, it's weird, I'd heard of neither until I started getting targeted Modsy ads on Facebook, and then started googling.

I think I'm going to give it a shot. At worst it's a waste of $50. At best I have a render of my actual room I can use to tinker around with layouts and save my husband from moving the furniture 10X before I decide.

My girlfriend was insistent on it, which I initially opposed, but at the end of the day, it was a great idea for inspiration. I would do it again when we move to a larger space.

But as someone else mentioned, Houzz was also a great spot to look for inspiration, but could get overwhelming. This is where the 1 on 1 comes in handy

So, I got my room renders today, and I am BLOWN AWAY at how much they look like my actual room. They even got the inlay border on the hardwood, and a view into the kitchen (which is attached) for context.

As far as helping choose a layout, the two floorplans they suggested (without input from me) were nearly identical to the two floorplans we were debating. (Hey! we were on the right track!) It was VERY helpful to see actual furniture rendered in place in the space, so I can see exactly how big of a sofa will fit, etc. And seeing the two layouts actually layed out, not just in our heads, helped my husband and I feel confident which was the best option for our needs.

As for the decorating aspect, I didn't immediately love all of the styles they went with. But, I have that issue frequently (getting people to grasp my style which isn't easily categorized). The editing tool will let me swap in different pieces if I want to try different art or rug, and I also was able to email to request a few tweaks that I wanted the designer to do.

Final verdict: Although the decor wasn't entirely inspiring it was entirely worth the cost for me in how it let us visualize where to put furniture in the new space. I may purchase some of the smaller accessories, like lamps, small tabletop items, etc.

For kicks, I'll show you actual photos vs. render. Also, in the photos I sent, there were a ton of moving boxes and other junk. Really amazed at how they cleaned it up.
