Hi everyone, I''m a first time poster - but have been looking at this site for a few weeks now. So much incredible insight/information!

I really need some advice from the experts. I''m considering getting my 2.10 carat round brilliant reset as my husband and I just celebrated our ten year anniversary and he wanted this to be his gift to me. However, I still really like my current setting which is a 18K plain yellow gold cathedral setting with four platinum prongs. I wear this with a 1/2 carat baguette eternity wedding band. The only thing I don''t like about my rings is that they are in yellow gold, and I only wear white gold/platinum now.

The new setting I''ve been thinking about has a very small halo in a cathedral mounting with small pave stones around a thin shank. I hope that makes sense! I have seen so many beautiful settings, but I have never seen a halo setting in a cathedral mounting (especially one that isn''t really high). I want to be able to wear a thin wedding band next to the new setting and would like to get it all done in platinum. The other thing I keep hearing is that platinum doesn''t stay shiny, and scratches very easily. I definitely want the halo a little below the center stone, as I''m afraid it might detract from my stone. If any one can offer any thoughts on this or have seen a setting like I''m describing, I would very much appreciate it! Most halos I''ve seen have larger stones than I would like. I have searched high and low all over the great sites recommeded on PS, but to no avail.

Sorry for the long post!

Does this qualify for 'cathedral style halo' ?

the picture come from HERE.

The shoulders of the band do arch up towards the diamond frame of the center stone... but the ring being low they are not too prominent. The ring below makes them reach 'though' the halo - so the cathedral-style look is more obvious:

It just so happens that neither of these is made for a round stone (for squares smaller than your bauble), but the first was custom made and the second (from Exceldiamonds) might as well come in other versions too. It is always worth asking...

NiceIce used to keep a setting like that for rounds that they called 'boxter'. Now the site is under repair an I can't find it anymore! Perhps drop them a line with refference to this thread.

And Precisionset seems to have just the thing. They make a series of paved cathedral settings for rounds and fancies that fit flush with wedding bands. Only the onle for the asscher is shown in detail, but there is one just like it for rounds visible from a rather useless angle in the back of the second picture.

Hope some of this helps a bit...

Here is the Daniel K one (that used to be on the Niceice site) which is sometimes called the empress, sometimes called the boxter.

YUM!!

Like this but for a Round?

Yeay Blue Roses!!!
That's insanely gorgeous!!!!

I think for a 2 carat stone it would have to be an quite a delicate halo.

Couln''t resist !

The ring at Icestore looks like a version of the small Legacy ringby Tiffany. I don't know if Icestore will make a settig for your stone, but they might have a solution.

2 carat is prety big ! Is this halo dainty enough ?

The picture comes from HERE and this is a 'cathedral' style as well.

You are all THE BEST!

I cannot believe what beautiful settings you all found....These are VERY close to what I have been searching for, but with a very small halo like the one with no side stones below (the picture from Valeria with the straight on hand shot) . I love that setting and the small stones around the diamond, but I really like a very open prong type setting underneath. The Daniel K setting is GORGEOUS - does anyone know if the halo can be made smaller? The one from Precision is so pretty (but hard to see what it looks like in round due to that picture they have). Lovey''s ring...WOW!!

I think if I could combine some of these settings, I might have "the one", although I have no idea who I could use to do a custom setting... Do you all think that I should even put a halo around a 2 carat stone? My friends think I''m crazy and say that it will take away from the center stone, so I''m not sure if I should do a simple pave cathedral setting with perhaps stones on the prongs like the beautiful Michael B setting - haven''t seen anything like it in cathedral though. Also, what is the wearability like with platinum? Does it really scratch and get a dull finish over time?

Thanks again everyone!!

- a very small halo like the one with no side stones below
there is something special about that halo - not only the diamonds are small (usually 1 ointers or a bit less!) but the girdle of the center stone goes a bit over them with no rim of metal inbetween or on the outer side - this makes the halo look allot thinner.

- a very open prong type setting underneath.
any of these rings could look like that if done a bit higher...

- Daniel K setting is GORGEOUS - does anyone know if the halo can be made smaller?
se above (*) for one way...

- Lovey's ring...WOW!!
you can say that again! There are several other halos made by Leon Meje - at least one for a round, and more recently one for an oval that might be quite close to what you are looking for, expect for the configuration ofthe halo mentione above (if you care for it). The 'Lovey' ring was inspired by another, done for a cushion for Reena. You can easily look them up if not done already. Here's the oval (LINK)

This is already the job of the ring maker to put one and one together. Most will produce detailed drawings and youcan take it from there.

Why not ;) Thereare rings anywhere between half 0.5 and a 10 carats with halos around here and they all look great. IMO, that is a relatively large stone an thre is not a chance that a rim of one pointers will detract from it's presence.

With all thepave, there will not be all that much left to scratch. It usually takes a long time for the rings to get a dull patins, and even then it can be polished away. Since the wear progresses imperceptively slow, no wonder most get to like it after all. Otherwise, any jewelry shop ca provide the minimal maintainance. Eacj jewelry maker (local or online) will have their own practical advice about this fit for the technicals of thepiece and circumstances. Not a big problem, if at all.

Actually... see the last Leon Meje piece on Show Me the Ring. The picture below is a (badly spoiled) version that tried hard to fit the specs cited above. My only excuse is amateurism, really - this should have looked allot better
