Hair salon owner and tip

the owner is not a employee working for a wage. the owner is a business person using capital to make capital. his/her labor is an investment in his/her business. therefore, i only tip employees who traditionally are ill paid no matter the industry.

I used to have the owner of a salon do my hair and she told me not to tip her. The only time I did was when she had to do some extra work to get my color back to my natural state. My mom refuses to tip her stylist; she cuts and colors my mom's hair in less than a hour and charges almost $100. And she only works three days a week and has three kids, we haven't figured out how she pays the bills. :?:

She probably has a side-business out of her home :) lol

I've never had a salon owner cut my hair. If I were to, I would tip...it's just built into my philosophy.

What I HAVE had, and this was awkward, was taking my two sons in and each having their hair cut by a different stylist and I didn't want to tip one of them! Actually, this happened twice. The first time, I did tip both stylists, but my husband flipped out because I did. Basically the gal cut my son's side burns over 1" different length on each side. She LAUGHED when I pointed it out (and keep in mind my son is VERY self conscious about his hair). The manager called her in back and I think she got fired because I haven't seen her in there since.

The other time was at a different salon and one of the gals was late to cut my son's hair because she SAT in the salon chair talking on her phone. Then she grumbled and frowned the entire time and was rude to me until it was tip time. I gave the other gal her tip and walked out. I felt bad b/c the tip probably still had to be split between the two of them.

Most salon owners don't expect a tip, but it's still a generous thing to do if you feel that it's warranted.

Running a salon costs money, lots of money actually...and their "take" is often less then an employee simply because everyone and everything gets paid first. Most stylists actually only take less than 30% of what the service fee was, it increases with seniority but rarely ever more than 50%. There is also a rule of thumb that most stylists make minimum wage OR commission, whichever is greater....if a new stylist without cliental is on the floor 40 hours per week without making the salon money (seeing clients, selling product...) the owner still pays them, obviously, but it out of the salons net which is directly linked to the owners income.

At the end of the day it all comes down to what you're comfortable with. Would I tip? Absolutely, if I felt like the job done was to my expectations.

If an owner's take is less than an employee, then why do they choose to go through the whole work of running the salon and have the burden of the huge responsibilities? This doesn't make any sense to me...I don't know what is happening in the States, but in Greece the salon owners make A LOT of money and it is considered insane to tip them...
