ask the waiter what kind of plate the person sitting next your table ordered.

I have. I have also directly asked the person eating the dish, politely of course.

did you ask if you can try some?...

Many times. Why not!?

I have asked the server. Why not? Sometimes you see something and you think "I WANT THAT!"

Sure. Even better -- once in Milan an Italian colleague & I were eating at a wonderful small bistro he knew. We both leered at whatever the man at the next table had -- looked delicious & we were trying to figure out what it was when he said, "It's blahblahblah -- would you like to try a bite?" What a honey! He put a little on a butter plate & handed it over. Only in Italy!!

Absolutely, short of the asking to try their food from their plate part though. :))

Hahaha oh yes!

I usually don't since most people are eating meat dishes. I usually have to peruse the menu and find a vegetarian dish that appeals to me.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

OH I always do this! Or I'll order and then immediately whatever the table next to us gets served looks better than what I got. I have orderer's envy lol

Too funny! My youngest sister will always ask, "Can I have some of that?" when we eat out. If she ordered the same dish as me, she'll say that mine just looks better.

I just realized that the only times I've asked what someone else has ordered, it's been an outrageously gorgeous dessert. I guess plating really is important...

When I first met SO, he was not at all into sharing from his plate or ordering two entree's and splitting them when I couldn't decide.

I've now trained him well, and when his plate comes to the table looking more appetizing than mine, he simply hands his over!

We never eat out because I always regret what I ordered and wish I ordered something else. I'm hard to please that way!
