No.

I was never a cheerleader in HS or college. I had absolutely zero interest in it. The funny thing is, BOTH my daughters are cheerleaders. There is so much drama! Why anyone decides to do this is beyond me. LOL.

I was on the pom squad/dance team. In my opinion, we were WAY cooler than the cheerleaders. Well, we were at least less bitchy and less dramatic.

yes I had pom poms in HS

Go D-F!

Nope. But I was in my high school''s math team (and cheered for it whenever we attended competitions

I never had any interest in cheering. After HS, I worked for a little over two years for a cheerleading supply catalog in their customer service dept. and WHOA - what a scary job. Cheer moms and coaches were some of the least rational, most demanding, crazy people I have ever dealt with in a retail job.

I once had a call from a guy who said he was an "honorary girl" who went by "Michelle" and he was going to try out for the Dallas Cowboys cheer squad. He called because he wanted to know how to measure himself for the briefs that go under the skirts.

HOLD PLEASE!

We all know DF is just posing the question as an excuse to ask those of you that were cheerleaders to post pics!!

Ugh... yes, I was a cheerleader, but I got into it mainly because I did gymnastics and dance more seriously. The cheerleading was just a fun way to hang out with my friends and show off my acrobatic skills after school.

I dislocated my knee jumping into the splits during freshman cheerleading tryouts, so I had to bow out.

And then I became an athlete, instead, and played sports all four years. It''s funny how one little accident changed so much about my HS experience. No regrets, though, I love my sports. :)

Yes, in high school, and I loved it. It got me involved in so many more activities. I also coached my first year teaching, however that proved to be just as much drama as actually being a cheerleader, so I quit that after a year.

I will let my children decide what they want to do, but I will think twice about allowing them to cheer, it is getting so much more competitive and crazy since I graduated high school and I can''t imagine what it will be like in the future!

Just wondering: Do you not consider chearleading a sport?

I was a cheerleader from the age of 10-15, but opted out in high school after I switched schools. It was a lot of hard work--rigorous practices, lots of competitions, stunts, dance, etc. It went above and beyond a little rah rah rah at a football game. I definitely considered it as demanding (if not more) than some of the other sports.

Believe it or not, yup.

I loved to dance. Kept me drug/alcohol free throughout college as dancing at clubs was enough for me.

Our team was half airheads, half AP students. Interesting mix.

Oh hell yes, I still shake those pom poms...

JK,

I went to an all girls school... But was a dancer and a gymnast, LOL!!!

Cheered in middle school and part of high school... Although I had danced all my life and finished out high school on the pom squad.

Cheerleading these days is a seriously athletic sport!

Unfortunately we have NOTHING like the sports clubs or cherrleading squads or any extra curricular activities in Australia like in the US.

The only exposure to cheerleading I have ever had is what I have seen on TV

Yes, I was! As a matter of fact I started cheering in the 4th grade, and I was even the captain of the squad when I was in 7th and 8th grades. I only cheered for one year in High School because I needed to get a JOB, and make some $$$$. I loved it, it kept me in great shape, and it kept me very social. I have to say cheerleading has changed a lot since I was a cheerleader, it is more like gymnastics and dancing now!

Yep! 10 years! I started with the local boys & girls club, then 1 year in junior high, and all three years of HS. I loved every minute of it! I''m with Beechezz - when we were cheering it was about the precision and yelling - now it''s a lot of gymnastics and dancing! Regional competitions were embarassing though - in our county/state we were restricted on what we could do - our pyramids could only be 2.5 people high, no basket tosses, no aerials, etc. I miss being able to eat like a pig and not gain any weight though!

My question is - do any of you remember your cheers? I have a couple stuck in my head that I don''t think I''ll ever forget

I know the question wasn''t directed at me, but I wanted to put my 2 cents in. I don''t consider cheerleading/dance team to be a common "sport." I do, however, consider dancers and cheerleaders "athletes."

Yep, I sure was. Starting in third grade through high school. I actually chose my high school in part because of their competitive cheerleading squad (not uncommon at all where I lived). We worked extremely hard and went to national competitions in Disney every year. I can''t stand when people say cheering is not a sport, it most certainly is. In fact, I was on ESPN a couple of times (more than you can say for most high school sports).

I did not find there to be a lot of drama, or not any more than you typically find with high school girls. We were too focused on winning, like most athletes! I am still very close with a number of the girls I cheered with (3 were bridesmaids in my wedding).

Also, the stereotypes about cheering bother me, I was an AP student with a 4.0 and most of the other girls were good students as well - we all went on to good colleges.

Yes, I was...from 8th grade on. It was fun times. Kept me in shape and out of trouble after school. Oh and I agree, Luckystar that it was just as demanding as some other sports. We had to run every practice, workout in the weight room, then perform stunts, gymnastics, and routines. It wasn't just rah rah sis boom bah...shake your pom poms, it was hard work! Have you ever seen the competitions on ESPN? I don't think you couldn't call it athletics after that.

I agree about the generalizations as well. Most of us were honor students (2 went to ivy league schools) and were not in the least bit witchy. Dramatic at times, maybe, but what teenage girl isn't???

I was! I cheered from 5th grade through senior year in high school when I was the captain. My senior year in college I joined an all star group, but had to quit after I broke my nose for the 3rd time (1st 2 times were in high school also from cheerleading). My hs squad was definitely full of drama, but I did my best to ignore it. I really wasn''t into cheering at games, but I LOVED competing.

yes. A wrestling cheerleader for oh about two months, until they band all non-academic related clubs due to the gay/lesbian club issue back in the days, but kept PEP club?

I'm not even coordinated at all now.

I wanted to try out, but figure skating kept me busy! I''m a good dancer but very average gymnast, so I''m not sure I would have made the team. Those girls were very competitive.

My SIL loves to brag about her cheerleading days. However, she''s from a tiny school where pretty much everyone walked on to the team. She''s extremely uncoordinated and could never even do a cartwheel! It''s so funny how expectations vary!

That is so cool Tgal! Our school had 2 valedictorians and they were on the team.

I agree with others it was great exercise; I lost 15 lbs with in the 1st month of being on the team. I see our old coach at the gym and she is in great shape (then and now). She use make us do walking lunges to strengthen our legs, push ups and we ran every other day during practice.

Steph, I love to watch the ESPN competitions; it is crazy what those girls can do!!

Nope, marching band hottie- and yes, I said hottie, because we all the practices we were subjected to I had a nice tan and very toned body :-)

Nope! I had no interest, and our cheerleading squad was, uh....not the greatest/most athletic. It actually felt a lot like somebody tried to take the Great American High School Experience and transplant it somewhere it didn't really work. Weird. Our dancers, though, were amazing. I'm still in awe at some of the things they could do.

Instead, I spent 3 hours a day in the theater, and up to 8 hours a day on the weekends (the last few weeks before a show) in the theater. I had a blast with all my actor buddies, even if we never had a pep rally full of people to cheer for us (another thing stolen from the GAHSE that just didn't fit....).

intermural cheerleader in college.. yeah, there is such a thing. basically it involved funnels, and a lot of fun!
