Big question for me at that time. Hearts and arrow stone. Platinum ring. AGS graded. H vs G color. Is the premium asked for G worth????
1 carat
I think getting a G over H means something like 750$ in those ranges

Thank you

carat weight? prices?

I personally like diamonds to be higher colour. Many here like lower colour because they still look quite white and offer good value. An excellent cut helps.
You need to look at a few different stones that are very similar except for colour, and decide what looks best.
If this is an engagement ring, and the premium for G over H is $750, get the G.

I agree, if it is only $750 more, get the G. My ring stone is G and my earrings are H. Hard to tell the difference but I really like my ring stone bright and white!

HI:

What is your priority?

cheers--Sharon

I'm not as color sensitive as many here, so for me it's difficult to see the color difference between a G and an H unless they are side by side and unset. So, I guess I would save the $750 and put it toward the wedding band, a pendent or even save it for the wedding. Have you had an opportunity to view a G and H side by side? What did you think?

If you are not a color sensitive don't pay for a G vs an H. Just my 2 cents.

I would say depends upon your overall finances and her jewelry collection. If you could go with an H and then get a diamond pendant as a wedding gift with the $750, then that would be a fun alternative to a G stone. If she already has the diamond basics, the a G stone would be nice!

I usually prefer higher color in diamonds for rings but if your budget is tight, go for the lower color.

I went to Birks and went through a few diamonds (all mounted unfortunately) but all 1 carat with "same cut" (the Birks soo excellent cut)
Side by side, I could see the difference between F and H
G vs H was less obvious to me, but I thought there was a slight difference. It is clear that angle/lightning changes everything there...
Then he brang another stone and did not say anything, I looked at it next to H stone, and said it was probably G. Then I looked and it was H. Afterthen I think I could imagine that there was a slight difference...
There is clearly something from H to F though. I do not think F is really worth the mega premium (and H&A F are rare)
Thank you for your answers

Seems like you might be color sensitive and if you are it's worth the extra money for the G for your ER. It comes down to your personal preference of course but just going by your posts I think you would prefer the G. Good luck!

I agree that the color difference between an F and an H is much more apparent than between G and H, keep in mind though, that these differences are more obvious in unset stones than when the diamond is mounted. Something else you may want to consider is how the stone will be set. Are you planning on setting the diamond in a simple solitaire setting or a more elaborate setting with side stones or melee? An H will face up bright and white in a solitaire setting however if your particular setting has additional stones you may prefer to have your center stone match them as closely as possible. Most won't notice a large contrast until the I J range when the melee is EFG since the performance of tiny melee is slightly different than a large center diamond, but again, if your color sensitive you may want to consider this.

There are people who'd prefer a larger stone in a lower color or a smaller stone in a higher color. You cannot go wrong with G or H, but color is so personal.

This will be a plain solitaire platinum with some sort of cathedral pattern.
Though decision for color though

I would prefer the G. In fact, my sweet spot is F. But then again, I'm someone who wears an I. It really boils down to your budget and priorities.

Since you've said you're getting a platinum setting, and also that you can see tint pretty easily, I'd go with the G color. G is plenty white, to me. If you were choosing white gold, I might have said H.

I have an H, but it's set in white gold, which is more buttery white, vs. platinum is more icy white. The first time I saw my H diamond out of its setting and turned pavilion-up, its color scared me. It looked brown! Face up, it looks white. But that showed me just how much tint is really there, and that I can see tints readily.

You might have seen a difference between the two H diamonds because one is a near-G an the other is a near-I.

Or if you can find an H with fluorescence that doesn't negatively effect the stone, you might get something that looks as colorless as the G.
