Probably not.... but remember, even amongst those who can, many find the difference irrelevant ;) I could tell an E from an H side by side but the G vs H probably only if it was a high G and a low H. A low G and a high H might be indiscernible.

I am not going to speak for the G and H color, but I can't imagine someone not noticing the difference in my E to an H color. It takes all of half a second for me to see the difference face up in a stone holder side by side. But, I have no way of really knowing averages either.

Also, I think most women would prefer an H if it meant bigger.

Depends on the individuals colour perception and which lab/s graded the diamonds, also as Cehra notes, whether we are talking about ' high' G 's, H's or E's. So it is hard to generalise here, also whether the diamonds are compared side by side. Possibly between an E and H the average person might be able to tell, H and G not so much as they are only one grade apart.

Ditto

H/G-most people cannot. I can''t tell the difference between my .30 I stones and my .30 H stone from the side or face up.
H/E some people will be able to tell, especially from the side but not everyone will be able to. Both will still look very white.

I think the average person can''t look at someone''s engagement ring and have any idea of the color.

If it was an "L" or something, than yeah...that''s probably obvious.
But D-J? Nah. I know I couldn''t! Not a single solitaire diamond. I''d have to compare it to something else.

I think most people CAN tell the difference but only if the stones are next to each other and of equal cut quality. The question is once it is set, does it matter or will it look too yellow for one''s personal taste. I happen to like the warmth of G-J range and I certainly can see the difference. Some folks assume owning an H or J stone is only for those who can''t see the yellow. That''s not always true. Some see it and prefer it. Some prefer getting a larger stone over high color. And some prefer the warmer colors with their complextion.

I'm new here and have seen it mentioned a few times that being able to discern the difference also depends on cut? Is that true? I was at the store trying to get an idea of how low I am willing to go on color and the I color looked obviously warm to me. The H looked pretty good next to it or alone. I have not yet compared G to H... I think either would be so close that they might not make a difference to me. There were no E's to compare to there, but as I recall at another jewelers' the E was pretty strikingly white. My FI couldn't tell the difference between the H and I (but I think he might be color blind though he did good picking out a couple small diamonds for me)... I am by FAR not an expert, though better than average I would think.

An I is where the trade believe the average person may begin to notice a hint of warmth, especially from the side, this also depends on individual colour perception and preferences. A great cut can help a warmer colour face up better, so a well cut I may look far whiter than a lesser cut with the same colour grade. Size of the diamond can also play a part, also some believe medium and upwards blue fluorescence can aid a warmer colour. I think many would have trouble picking out a similarly graded G from an H, especially as they are only one grade apart, a G to an I may be more noticeable. An H may be a nice middleground.

I think it would be really hard to tell the difference with two stones that have ideal cuts. When I was shopping around recently, I saw some loose "H" stones that definitely had tint to them. That''s one reason I was hesitant to buy the "H" X-Factor I did. But I can tell you that after receiving it, it is as white/clear as most of the "F" stones I looked at locally. It''s cut incredibly well and I think that helps a lot with the color.

Speaking as a girl with an H stone... I can tell the difference between H and E only when side by side, but it''s definitely not worth the extra cash for an E if you ask me. If the cut is stellar, the H will look fabulous! (as will a G :)

What I meant to say, was that if someone extended their hand to me and said "guess what color this diamond is", I would have no idea unless it was next to a D colored diamond. In my opinion, every diamond looks "white" by itself. Even if I saw a J or K, it would probably still look white to me by itself. (Especially since the average diamond sold in a maul store is a lower color)

I dunno.

I''m brand-new but have been reading and admiring for a few years now. I had to respond to this topic because I have an 1.84 ideal cut , VS2, I color stone with medium-blue flourescence. I consider myself to be pretty good about being able to tell the difference between color grades (maybe not exact, but I know a good-color stone when I see one)....any way, this stone is an upgrade from a .95 F VS2....I really wanted a larger stone, and hubby and I spent at least a year doing research and shopping around casually. Initially we bought a 2.11 I-color stone that I liked at first, but was not 100% thrilled with after wearing it for 3 days. I found myself at work almost shy about showing it off because it appeared more yellow under the office lights. What an awful feeling! Thankfully our jeweler is a local guy who is an aqcuaintance, and we brought it back to him and told him I wanted something smaller and whiter. He found us my current stone, also an I, but because of its cut and the blue flourescence, it appears very white and is really gorgeous. I am quite happy with it for now (in another 2 yrs we are going to upgrade one more time to an F or G color around 2 carats). I am desperately wanting to reset it (right now it''s in a plain platinum setting), but I just can''t do it with this stone because I want a specific style by Leon Mege and want all the stones to be in the F-G range because that will be it-I''ll be buried with that last ring!:) I really hope the next 2 years fly by because I am OBSESSING over it!

In the Rough...not much difference between G & H, and so many other factors come into play, but if you color is the most important thing to you, go with the F color. I personally went for a very large H color stone w/strong blue fluorescence that is super bright white! The only way to tell it''s color is to hold the stones next to other colors of the same cut grade, I think. I think most people would prefer a larger stone that gives them more bang for their buck. Hope that helps!
