Hi all

I was wondering the H&A patterning of a diamond.
I recently ordered a round brilliant diamond (no photos or images of the rock) with the following dimensions:
according to GIA cert ex/ex/ex:
crown angle 34.5
pav. angle 40.6
table% 56
depth% 61.3

if these dimensions are correct, could you assume anything at all about the hearts and arrows patterning?

thanks in advance

My guess is that you''ll likely see the arrows. It might be hard to tell if it has perfect hearts. But I wouldn''t worry about that since once the stone is set, you can''t see hearts anyway! Sounds like a nice stone!

I wouldn''t assume anything, you have a beautifully cut diamond by the sound of it which might show arrows but as DS says you need images and particularly hearts images to judge any h&a patterning. Also some well cut diamonds may not show this patterning, conversely lesser cuts can so each diamond needs evaluating on its own physical and desirable visual properties.

Would it be correct to say though, that the best cut diamonds would all show perfect hearts and arrows patterning?

thanks for your input!

What you want is excellent light performance, and that does not require perfect hearts and arrows. Seriously, I think your stone sounds like a winner!

Ditto. Maybe this article will be helpful to you to explain more about h&a. It depends on what you mean by best cut, a top cut diamond might show well formed hearts and arrows yet not meet the strict standards upheld by h&a conoisseurs.

Thanks for the help! Luckily I have access to a microscope (with a mounted camera) so hopefully i can post some high resolution images for you to see. I am really excited about the stone, and hope that it is nice. But being a scientist the question still intrigues me:)

I understand! The diamond will be gorgeous and we would love to see some pics when you get it! You could buy an Idealscope for $25 and view your arrows with it if you wished, plus it is a very useful tool to have and keep by you for any future diamond purchases!
