When my sister described the ring she wanted to her now-husband, he said, "So, basically you want a Buick on your finger." I thought what a great way to discuss the e-ring with guys . . . an analogy with cars! I joked with SO that I wanted a Lexus on my fingers, to which he replied, "well, maybe a Yugo." For years, talk of marriage would lead to this discussion of e-ring and cars. SO and I have been together 9 years and since moving in together 5 1/2 yrs ago, we''ve talked about the e-ring bling. I think I started dragging him to B&Ms two years ago, and he has started to get an idea of costs (albeit overpriced retail).

I actually started looking at rings with a Yugo budget in mind, and it was SO who didn''t like any of the rings I tried on with that budget. So, now I think we''re looking at a budget of a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla.

Comparing the ring to a car helped prepare my SO for the e-ring shopping. At first he couldn''t believe that one would spend that much money and not be able to drive it. Now, he''s fully engaged in the more bang-for-the-buck search of the ring. We''re doing the custom ring route for a sapphire ring. We think we''ve found the stone and will hopefully decide soon on the setting.
Has anyone else faced a similar reaction with their BF/SO?

Now, I just wonder how he''s going to propose . . .

LOL... no similar situation, but I just know if I had to "relate" the e-ring purchase to anything in SOs life, it would be an analogy to computers.

Do we want the super fast quad-core processor, or are we rocking a Commodore 64?

I love this! I told bf I want a classic aston martin or jaguar.

Forgot to mention that SO does say, "honey, forget the Lexus; you deserve a Ferrari, but we need to save money for the future

Last year I went into Tiffany''s with my husband. I tried on a Legacy that was about 2.75 carats, and cost $65000. The very savvy SA took out his calculator and figured out for us that over the course of 30 years, that amounts to just $5.94 a day! Try that with your BF.

LOL when I first started reading this thread I thought to myself, "I wouldn''t mind a Toyota Corolla on my finger!" Seems I''m not alone.

I tried that, it didn''t work. We have much nicer electronics than jewellery. Cost per day hasn''t helped much either. My engagement ring cost less than 16 cents/day spread over 30 years and my wedding band less than 10 cents/day spread over 30 years.

Oy, I would have had to explain this in terms of camera equipment:

I guess I wanted an Oakley Red camera body with an 18-50mm F2.8 CF lens, a Red-Rail mounting system and a RedFlash CM module for image storage.

I'd have to say I got the Red camera body.

That''s funny... my FI bought a new car and traded in his truck a month before we were engaged. The weekend after we were engaged, one of his friends commented about my ring, referring to how much it must have cost.

My FI said, "Well, it did cost more than my truck. That''s not bragging about the ring; that''s saying how pitiful my trade-in value was on the truck!" He gave a fake sad face, and left it at that.

So now we say I have a Chevy truck on my finger

or aston martin like ladypirate said

At one point during the payment phase of buying the diamond and discussing setting prices, FF exclaimed "Why do you want a brand-new Honda Civic on your finger?" I found it funny because my first car was a 1989 Civic, and then I replaced it with my dad's 1998 Civic over 8 years ago. When this 10 year old Civic dies I'd rather buy another used Civic to replace it and continue wearing the brand-new one on my finger! FF currently doesn't own a car, but I doubt a brand-new Civic would appease his luxury car taste and desires. When it comes time for him to buy a car, I should remind him he's lucky to be with a Civic-happy girl!

Not so similar..

But this makes me think of how the men in my family, cousins, uncles, etc. compare women to cars... Like when my cousins (now married) would go out on a date with a new girl, they would come back to family lunch on the weekend and announce that they dated a BMW or say she was only a pick-up lol.

Cute to hear your story; it reminded me a lot of that!

Well in that case, my man is probably a roomy old vintage Buick, like this one:

linky for photo

Kinda reliable, those great old-time values, a bit romantic, heavy round the corners and very high sentimental value.

but the ring I'm rockin must be a bicycle!

i see many new cars on the fingers of PS ladies. and...a couple them with a house on their finger

My guy is into guns, I''d have to compare myself with something along those lines...he''d get the picture

TV''s :)
at first i couldnt understand why we needed a 42" tv. He couldnt understand the C''s of diamond. now i know about TVs and he knows about diamonds :)

that''s so funny! When I first told my boyfriend what I thought my engagement ring should cost he was shocked, so I told him "oh please you wouldn''t blink an eye at spending at least 30 grand on a car you''ll drive for like 4 years, so it makes sense that you would spend that much on something I''ll wear everyday", and you know what he thought it made perfect sense!
