Hi
Is anyone doing a groom''s cake? I have not been to a wedding where there was one, but I see them more and more lately online and on
the Wedding Cake show on the style network.

So
what are they for?
do they cut them like we cut our wedding cake? to a song at the reception?
is anyone having one? if yes what?

Yep we''re planning on having one. It''s a smaller cake and typically represents something from the groom''s personality. You can have it at the rehearsal dinner or along side wedding cake. Not as formal of a cake cutting ceremony for that typically I believe. I''m probably doing something nerdy like a star trek theme.

Haha. Hope that helps some!

Most of the weddings i;ve been to the grooms cake was set out to view and then I think just cut by the caterers. Its usually something kind of funny or oriented to the guy''s hobby or interests. Like his fav. football team, or fishing, golf, ect. A lot of the the ones I''ve seen also go with a heavier flavor combos...like red velvet, chocolate on chocolat type of thing as an alternative choice to the bride''s cake.

I woud just have fun with the groom''s cake...one wedding I saw had krispy kreme donuts all piled up in a pyramid with a little plastic fisher person and little plastic fish around. So have fun and be creative if you decide to have one.

ok sounds good - is it done usually as a surprise to the groom - so i were to get him one i would not tell him anything and just let it be there for him at the reception??? ohh i like the idea!

Not usually. They groom is typically the one that decides what he wants his cake to be.

I think its fun if its a surprise because its something that you thought about that is just for him on the wedding day, which lets face is mostly about what the bride wants.

Maybe ask if he would rather be surprised, or if he wants to be involved.

I''m getting a Groom Cake

. My father is a pastry chef, so I figured I''d take full advantage

. I am having a croque em bouche. Its creampuffs piled into a pyramid of sorts and held together by carmailzed sugar. I figured my guests are already getting cake so they should get something a little different as well. More dessert the merrier right?

I''m doing a groom''s cake and the design will be a surprise for my FI. Most of my friends have also surprised their FI/DH with the design and it''s a fun little thing for the groom on a day that''s often all about the bride and shows you put some thought into it.
Here''s a question for you all, though (sorry to kinda threadjack)... If you''re serving it at the wedding how are you dividing up the # of servings of the regular cake and groom''s cake? I feel like you need to have enough of both cakes so that everyone can try both -- so that some people aren''t left out. But all the groom''s cakes I''ve seen are smaller than the wedding cake. Are you going to serve the wedding cake and have the groom''s cake set out for people to pick up if they want it?

The groom''s cake is a southern tradition, as far as I know.

We had one. It''s typically a red velvet cake in the shape of something that represents the groom''s interest (think of the bleeding armadillo cake from Steel Magnolias).

My hubby had a gross cake--it was a human body with the muscular system on the right side and the skeletal system on the left. (He''s a Muscle Specialist.) I was shocked that everyone ate it, we didn''t even have a piece to take home. It was actually pretty funny, and so appropriate.

It used to be a Southern tradition. It seems to be much more mainstream now. The cynical side of me wants to say that this has been driven by the wedding industry "machine." But it could be that people just really like the tradition, it does seem pretty fun.

I''m not doing one because my wedding is so small they will probably not even eat all of the "regular" wedding cake. Plus we are on a budget. But if I were having a large wedding and budget wasn''t tight, I''d probably do one.

Oh my gosh! I haven''t found any one else having croque em bouche! I want to do this for our main wedding cake. Do you have a picture of what yours is going to look like? I would love to see it.

I asked my site coordinator this exact question. she said the regular wedding cake is served to guests and that the grooms cake would be put out on a station and people can take it if they want. She said to get it for 30-50 people max. I am getting quotes now. my budget is tight for this one as its ANOTHER last minute expense i just thought of and hadn''t originally budgeted for! AHHHHHHHHH

Thanks, iloveprincesscuts.

As far as budget breakers go, at least this one isn''t a huuuge expense. But I''m sure the extras add up fast!
