Received a lovely one from Edward Bristol last week. Can't stop looking at it. Communing with it, more like. 2.32 ct. 6.02x7.51x6.6, IF, untreated of course from Edward. These pics are under incandescent light. Tried some in the sun today -- could not pick up the colors; it has wonderful blue-green flashes & sparkles beautifully but my camera couldn't catch it. Frustrating to look at the real one, then in the viewfinder & it looks like a different stone.

Green can be relatively hard to photograph depending on the camera you use (sometimes the lighting plays a part too).

The shape is lovely, whats your plans for it?

It is hard, Arcadian. It tends to black out instead of showing the range of colors. I think my camera could do better if I could figure out all the gizmos. Just discovered how to make it do macro. It is lighter than the pics. Will try again tomorrow outside.

Advice welcome for a setting! YG 18kt -- I don't wear white metals because I look awful in them, I'm too pale myself for pale metals. And my bands are YG. Maybe a halo. Also was thinking of side stones instead, blue rather than yellow, maybe spinels if it wouldn't make the whole thing too dark. Can't get it set for a while so will have time to ponder.

This is Edward's photo of it, which shows the colors better. I love those blue flashes.

I feel your pain; greens are tough to photograph. Try standing with your back to the sun and your body shading the stone. I love the colors in Ed's pictures. I would set it in yellow gold too. I like the side stone idea better than a halo; maybe half moons or traps.

I think yellow gold will go well with your new tourmaline. As for photography, I find outdoor picture taking less trying as I don’t have to worry about providing my own light source.

Was thinking of traps too, Kismet. Or shields. What about merelani mint garnets or blue spinels? Mostly I wear pinks & blues so want to bring out the blue in the tourmeline. I'm not especially interested in diamonds, too normal. I suppose I'd have to have them cut -- does that get into lots of extra $$$?

Chrono, you must have the exposures down pat on your camera if it's easier to photograph outside. Shades of color just looked black when I tried the other day. It's also hard to place the stone where sunlight shows its colors as you want, even without taking a pic. Shadow is an idea to try, thanks, Kismet. I will work on it -- my camera does great snapshots but, ahem, news flash, doing gems is a whole different ballgame. You are both skilled at it -- I'm determined to get there.

OMG I love it!!!!! Drooooool

Traps and shields are great ideas but will require custom cutting, especially for coloured gemstones. I like the idea of light pink to bring out the blue in the tourmaline. I’m in the process of doing this myself; my pink spinels should be arriving any day now.

I wouldn’t dare say I have it down pat for outdoor photography at all. It is still a challenge but whenever I take pictures indoors, the lighting condition is so dim and poor that everything looks drab and gray, even the walls of my home.

I love your tourmaline! It's Beautiful!!

That's a beautiful green tourmaline!

Thank you, Debby, vbnet & gempassion. I love it too.

Chrono -- saw your thread on your pinks w/the green -- I'm so interested to see how that turns out, can't wait till you get it & put it up. On the same lines I'm wondering how setting my tourmaline in RG would look. Oddball or a subtle way to bring out the blue?

I must admit, I don't know a thing about tourmalines but it looks very nice on your hand.

I think it's beautiful!!! Congrats and enjoy!! :appl:

Very nice! :appl:

Ed has some nice stuff, none of which I can afford.

Is it just me, or would he do better with a smiley picture of himself on the site? He doesn't look happy.

wow:) That's a nice, rich green. Is it a chrome?

Not a chrome, just an untreated wonderful green tourmaline. IRL it's a deep medium green w/flashes of green-blue and of yellow, excellent saturation w/out zoning. Ed described it on his site as "another of those hot mint tourmalines from Mozambique," but I don't see any mint in it at all. To my eye it is the green of emeralds we wish we could afford but never will unless we sell the house & live in the car.

ETA: Very like a tsavorite color except for the sparks of blue & yellow.

HA HA, I second both statements.

I did sort of raid the wallet for this. And I'm glad I did! I would be pleased if it were a tad bigger but couldn't afford more size. In a ring it will make me very happy. I've always bought one good thing rather than a lot of less-good things. Like when I travel I bring home one thing that really knocks me out instead of a pile of cheaper stuff for the same money. It's MUCH MUCH HARDER with gems -- hardly a site I look at (or B&M) where I don't badly want this...and that....and those...oh, and that one. Same, of course, when I look at the beauties PSers show off, eat my heart out.
