Green Sapphire Ring On A Budget

Hey everyone!

I've been looking into getting a green sapphire for a while now - I love green but want to be able to wear the ring regularly - which is why I picked sapphire(correct me if I'm wrong there)

I found one that I really loved but while I was trying to get the funds together - someone else pulled the trigger before me.

I'm looking to spend less than $1300 USD on the gem and setting and have no problem with heating. I'd like at least a carat, ideally pear shaped but if there isn't anything in my budget, I'm willing to be flexible.

I'd like diamonds in the band - just a simple pave setting works for me - in white gold. It would be easiest to get the gemstone and the setting from the same vendor I think, I'm under the impression that I would have to pay an extra fee to set the gem if the setting isn't from the same seller.

I would love love love to see if you guys can find anything I can't.

I really like the color of this

https://www.mastercutgems.com/Products-251-Ruby_and_Sapphire/8027-Natural_Bi_Color_Sapphire_1_10_ct-GemMedia.php?FromPage=2&ProductMediaID=31622

but like I said, I'm under the impression that I should get the stone and the setting from the same place?

Thank you so much everyone! I really appreciate it :)

You don't have to get the setting and stone from the same place for coloured stones. DiamondZone might have affordable settings for you.

Yup, totally agree with Chrono here. In your case I probably wouldn't recommend getting stone and setting from the same vendor, since you're looking for a specific color and cut and will be able to get better stones at more reasonable prices if you use our recommended vendor list.

Ok, so first things first--green sapphires aren't super common (although obviously they aren't impossible to find either), and pear shapes are also somewhat rare. Would you be open to chrysoberyl? I ask because it also has a hardness of 9 (just like sapphire), and is much more common in green. Or, would you be open to an oval or round green sapphire? The nice thing about oval or round stones is that they'll fit many stock settings, which will save you significant $.

Here are some stone options. We recommend finding the stone first, and then moving onto the setting.
1) https://www.mastercutgems.com/Products-251-Ruby_and_Sapphire/8709-Natural_Sri_Lanka_Blue-Green_Sapphire_1_02_ct-GemMedia.php?FromPage=1&ProductMediaID=35361 might be darker than you want

2)https://www.mastercutgems.com/Products-284-_MOST_Recent_CUT/8923-Natural_Neon_Chrysoberyl_1_385_carat-GemMedia.php?FromPage=1&ProductMediaID=36010 Chrysoberyl and not pear, but I really like the color so wanted to show you

3) https://www.mastercutgems.com/Products-296-Chrysoberyl_and_Danburite/8723-Tanzania_Natural_Chrysoberyl_1_41_ct_-GemMedia.php?FromPage=1&ProductMediaID=35400 a pear chryso with a sweet color

4) http://gemfix.com/gems/sapphire-montana-593-round-roulette-cut-1-20cts a montana sapphire will likely have the play of colors you like, but gemfix stones are more expensive, just FYI. But 6mm will likely fit a stock setting and my diamond zone has multiple settings with diamonds that are 300ish.

5) http://gemfix.com/gems/sapphire-montana-575-round-roulette-cut-1-52cts another round, another fairly expensive option.

6) http://gemfix.com/gems/sapphire-montana-644-round-roulette-cut-1-29cts another like the 2 above :)

IMHO you'll be able to find something good from MDZ for a setting. Here are some examples that are relatively inexpensive and have diamonds. But they have tons on their Ebay site if you want to browse. But overall I'd recommend finding stone first, setting later. Also, most of their settings can be modified for other stone sizes/shapes for 100-200ish. So if you end up going with a less expensive stone that's a pear (for example), you should be able to have them modify a setting you like for you and still be below budget :)

Chrysoberyl is an 8.5 hardness but can still be worn daily like a sapphire or diamond .

You can find the in the yellow green variety much more expensive in the blue green variety

Try searching for "Australian Parti-sapphires" for more green sapphire options - blue/green/yellow sapphires are more common in Oz as they are mined here and are generally inexpensive compared to other types. Perhaps contact Doug from Bespoke Gems or Coolomon Sapphires?

Whoah! Thank you guys so much - I was not expecting this much feedback since I know green sapphires aren't as popular/common.

The reason I want a pear is because I have an oval ruby and I would love to expand my shape collection - but if it would blow my budget then I'm willing to look at other shapes (like round and oval)

I absolutely love the Natural Sri Lanka Blue-Green Sapphire 1.02 ct on Master Cut and it gives me quite a bit of room in my budget still. Same with 0.55ct Blue / Green Parti Sapphire 4.7mm but it's much smaller than I was hoping.

I'm open to chrysoberyl if you guys say it will still hold up well but I really only liked the color of the second one - Tanzania Natural Chrysoberyl 1.41 ct. and.

I also liked the sapphire montana 644, Round “Roulette” Cut, 1.29cts but it does almost completely blow my budget. I did some browsing and found this one -

https://www.etsy.com/listing/222951528/15ct-precision-cut-montana-sapphire?ref=hp_rv

I'ts a little over 6mm so I don't know if I would be able to find a stock setting but the same vendor on Etsy has a setting I like on Loupe Troop for a 6mm round and she said she could talk to her jeweler to see if he thinks it would work. What do you guys think?

Again - thank you so much for your time. I've spent hours looking but I was really only looking at the big name ring vendors on here like JA and Blue Nile and so forth. I wouldn't have even thought to look at etsy or ebay and I had never heard of Diamond Zone (when I search them I get directed to http://ivyandrose.com/ - is that right? )

Yeah - I do seem to really like the blue green stones. I love how intense the loupe troop one is but wouldn't it have a dark bow tie in person?

I found this one https://www.etsy.com/listing/385142114/natural-green-sapphire-cushion-square - this is very green but it doesn't have any yellow in it - which I don't really seem to like.

I love some of the settings on the site that was suggested (by a few people actually!) so thank you very much for that!

Is this going in the wrong direction, since some of your top picks have a little blue in them? Its an interesting green:

I love this. It's really similar to the one I fell in love with a few months ago but it sold before I could buy it.

Would it be hard/expensive to find a setting for though?

Oh I didn't even notice that on my phone but I have it up on my computer and you're totally right.

I see a lot of high praise to Yvonne and love this one - does she ever do sales? This eats up a lot of my budget :wall:

Although that says sapphire in the title I'm pretty sure that's a mistake and that it's a tsavorite garnet, as it says in the listing.

Don't feel bad that vivid grass green just isn't something sapphire's do.

I still think that fine is pretty and a tsav would make a lovely ring too!

Cool!

It looks like it's not quite long enough to fit in this (6.2 vs 6.6), and who knows about the depth, but green stones and art deco can go well together imho:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1920s-DIAMO...443895?hash=item281b580037:g:3F4AAOSwj0NUeKUh

That would leave a little budget for mods, from what lovedogs was saying that might be reasonable, or at least worth asking.
