Hi

I have my heart set on having green gemstones in an eternity wedding band. I would prefer not to have it repaired every year of few months due to a lost stone. Which natural green gem would you recommend?

Green sapphires are very hard, though they tend to be an unattractive olive green. Do you have a vendor picked out yet? They may have suggestions, and also be limited in what types of stones they could source. Irradiated green diamonds might fit the bill, depending on your definition of 'natural.' Tsavorite garnets are more durable than emeralds or tourmalines, but you'd probably still have to wear the band very carefully.

Thanks ursberry. I have a local jeweler that will make this for me. I am thinking maybe only a half eternity band, to minimize the contact with hard surfaces with my palm.

On the Moh scale Tsavorite is 6.5-7.5 and Emerald 7.5 to 8.0. Why is Tsavorites preferable?

I think because , though emeralds may be harder, they are NOT tougher. Toughness is very different than hardness in gems and must be taken into consideration. Toughness combined with hardness is what makes a gem durable. Nephrite Jade is a perfect example. Jadeite jade is a little harder, but nephrite is tougher and much more resistant to sudden impact like collisions with other surfaces. I imagine that Emeralds are more brittle than tsavorites and therefor are more likely to chip.

For a ring with green stones, that will be worn just about every day, I recommend tsavorites. This is my wedding band with eight tsavorites.

Definitely tsavorite, it's a durable gem.

I'd go for nicely colored Russian Demantoid or tsavorite.

Another vote for Tsavorites. I have an eternity band thats never had issues.
