Just wanted to show off my green diamond! And ask for advice about whether I should send it to GIA or not. I’m not sure if it’s irradiated or if the color is natural, but I’ve read it can be difficult, even for GIA, to tell the difference.

The color seems to change depending on the lighting. In lowlight conditions it looks just about colorless. In artificial light it takes on a pretty aqua/bluish-green color, and in natural light it’s more of a light grass green. I’ve tried to capture the color in different lighting conditions, but it’s difficult!

Oops! I meant to post this in Rocky Talky. Is there a way to move it there?

Hit 'report concern' button on your original post and explain in comments.
Where /how did you acquire this ring?
Just thinking that it would be highly unusual to purchase a natural green diamond without some lab report attached, and I believe it does need some natural rough 'skin' uncut on the diamond for them to certainly say it's a naturally occurring /non man made/-assisted color.
Pretty ring. The stones different moods/color sound even more so.

Thank you. I purchased it from a gold buyer, who purchased it from someone who walked in off the street. So it’s third-hand to me at best. It was kind of an impulse purchase. I thought it was pretty, it fit my finger perfectly, and the price was right. So even without a report, and figuring was most likely irradiated, I grabbed it.

Very pretty color. Is the setting white gold or platinum?

It’s actually a Paloma Picasso .925 Loving Heart band. The prongs and stone were added to the band later, I’m guessing.

Gorgeous

I’m very happy to be totally wrong here and I don’t mean to be “Debbie Downer” but I actually think, from the colour, that it is Moissanite.
A gold buyer who isn’t a jeweller or gemologist who just uses a gem tester, to look out for CZ, might have been misled by getting a “diamond” reading on such a tester. Moissanite has a similar high thermal conductivity to diamonds, so show as the same.
Closer examination with a Loupe and looking in slightly from the side should show it’s double refractiveness (like a sort of blurring of the facets) and/ or the short needle like inclusions that are found in Moissanite.
As I said upfront, I’m very happy to be wrong here, that it is indeed a lovely diamond.

Like @Bron357 I hope I, too, am wrong, but my first thought when I saw your pics was that it reminded me of a blue-green moissanite I bought a few years back. It was beautiful, as is your stone. Just sharing because the color & faceting looks very similar to what I saw in that stone, though with pictures, you can never be sure. I hope yours IS a diamond, and agree that it would be worth having it accurately tested to be 100% sure. :wavey:

I also thought moissanite when I first saw it, but under a loupe there are lots of inclusions. Carbon and crystals, which I didn’t think you’d see in moissanite. I tried to check for doubling of the facets. I don’t think I see any, but I’ve never examined a moissanite before so I can’t be sure. The seller assured me it tested as a diamond, but I will probably take it to my jeweler next week to verify.

+1 about moissanite, that was my first thought as well. Also moissanite does have inclusions, but obviously I wouldn't know the difference between moissanite vs. diamond inclusions. It looks exactly like my blue/green moissanite though, and they test as diamond with commercial testers.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I did some researching of what to look for and I definitely DO see doubling of the facets. So it has to be moissanite and not a diamond. The inclusions really threw me off. They’re not just the typical needle inclusions that I thought you’d see in moissanite. I didn’t pay much for it, so I will keep it and enjoy it for what it is. And I’ll be sure to steer clear of that vendor in the future.

A shame it's not diamond but still a pretty ring for a good price! :)

Hmm. They aren't the first gold buyer to make this mistake, but actually only the dirt cheap testers make this mistake anymore. And as you now know, the doubling is not hard to spot, even without a loupe if you know how to look. But colored moissy is still lovely!

I have a green diamond ring too (my diamonds are treated). It's my favourite ring  congratulations on your beauty.

Edit: just seen that you believe yours is a moissanite. That's a annoying but it's still so beautiful

My first thoughts as well was it was the moissante green in a silver setting. I am glad you figured it out. It is a beautiful ring though.=)2

Bummer.
However, Moissanite is a very pretty, sparkly and robust gem.
Wear it and love it regardless.

HI:

Cool ring. Enjoy it!

cheers--Sharon
